Is there a reason why the weakness around the breach on the Abrams SEP is larger than the breach itself? Is this historical?

Externally that is the “mantlet” not the breech. Although that is an honest mistake since inthegame hitting that usually damages “the breech”.
Notionally, this is valid because the composite armor that has high stopping power, is contained in steel “box” that has just its RHA thickness. So even though the glacis/mantlet/trunnion interface isn’t a straight “slot” in the turret, it is a relatively weak point.
IRL this isn’t a problem because you can’t really hit a specific point like that without it just being lucky.
