A cautionary tale for those who think that the grass is greener on the other side

I have been disappointed by this game recently, the much anticipated return of the Advance mode was actually quite underwhelming and I am not interested in modern aviation so the nuclear mode is not for me, the infantry actually scares me, and I have been sorely missing what Advance should actually be like - Frontline in the other tank game that I stopped playing back in 2020.

There was a lot that had frustrated me over there 6 years ago, but I decided to give it another go last week, installed right in time for the Frontline (shame they ditched Grand Battles though). Felt quite nostalgic and exciting, but also old frustrations began creeping up again. And now that Frontline is over and I have played a few ordinary (“random”) battles, I am just utterly baffled by how worse it is than what we have in War Thunder.

  1. Tiny, claustrophobic maps, feels like sprinting while locked in a cupboard.
  2. Inane “battles” that are over in 3-4 minutes with a landslide either way.
  3. Abysmal aiming that cannot hit a static target a few hundred meters away. Despite me having excellent crews from several years of playing, and all the best equipment. I shoot carefully and see my shell going meters past the target, again and again. It is as if my crew is drunk.
  4. And when I die (no respawn allowed), I cannot start another battle in the same vehicle until the current battle is over. Like really?
  5. Fantasy tank fest. I get a more realistic feeling playing Heroes of Might and Magic.

So to those (including me) who are not quite happy with War Thunder - we should count our blessings. The grass is not greener on the other side, it is brown and rotting away.

i havent really had any games last near the full time limit for ages. the only time there was a chance of it, i nuked the game out.

Advance needs much much bigger maps vs whats currently being done too.

At least nuclear escalation is starting to be fleshed out, even with death bubble SPAA and trash BR brackets

Allow me to introduce my game mode suggestion for you then:

The entirety of every map now becomes a potential encounter with anything hostile as you’re on your way to a mission objective: Aircraft, tanks, helicopters (if you’re running a high BR rating lineup), and naval vessels all operating in the same space, while you can do the same again and again and again until the match times out or all the objectives are completed.

World of Tanks, the other game has a different approach compared to War Thunder whose are completely different games despite their content involving vehicular combat. You have games like Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match that depicts real-life machinery but the game has health bars and more ‘acrobatic’ vehicle mobility for a fast-paced gameplay, so if I’m looking for a more casual/arcade experience War Thunder must be the rotting grass side of the things (on that logic Gunner, HEAT, PC! must be dead soil).

Different games, different approach, different public. While War Thunder tries to recreate a more realistic combat environment where whoever sees first, shoot firsts and place the best shot first usually wins the combat, while on World of Tanks regardless if you’re seen, skill will mostly prevail if the opponent isn’t playing something stupid like a BZ-79. While I don’t find both titles good (I.e. groundbreaking content for the most part) they do have something each other don’t have which is completely subjective, if you don’t like one, try the other and vice-versa.

I’ve long gone been a active World of Tanks player, now I mostly play War Thunder because I’m lazy to not set-up the controls correctly to properly play Gunner, HEAT, PC!—and I don’t think there’s any reason to count blessing, this is just a coping mechanism, both games are terrible on their own.

Your an Arcade player? That explains why you think the battles end in 3-4 minutes. I am also a Arcade player, and I will say that if you want long battles, you gotta play realistic or simulator. Also with the removal of the Ho-Ris, there will only 1 fictional tank I believe (the Ostwind 2)

This is easily used to describe WT at top tier
