Just started playing the M50 Ontos and i noticed there’s 4 .50 cals on the cannon. In my first game in M50 i try to shoot a wall that can be destoryed by a normal .50 cal like on most tanks. and i noticed that Ontos’s .50 cal didnt destroy the wall, and i get killed from the enemy behind the wall.
if i remember correctly they’re all tracer rounds with little to no pen as they were used to help gauge distance so they’re probably too weak to do anything.
Like @LeadSlinger2304 said, they’re just there to help rangefind. The have almost the same velocity of the 106mm recoilless rifles you’re using, so you can fire the MG’s and get a good distance check
It’s not a .50 cal MG, it’s a semi-automatic/selfloading spoting rifle.
The caliber is not .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun or 12,7 x 99 mm), it uses a 12,7 x 77 mm .50 cal cartridge.
The spotter round was developed to replicate the trajectory of the 106 mm ammunition, and features a tracer element and a point-detonating incendiary filler to create a puff of white smoke at the impact point.
I do think (above by grumpysven) is right, other tanks such as the vickers mk1 and the chieftain have a similar system (except the ranging round on those tanks has the wrong velocity but oh well) and is not a thing specific to the ontos. Although the not breaking walls part is funny bc funny american gun act like funny british gun no wall break. (yes Ik grammar and stuff, I wanted a laugh)
i dont really know much abt the mg bcs i just started grind american tree. but the mg sound is similar to the browning so i thought it can destroy the walls unlike the small caliber one
The British tanks with 84mm, 105mm and the early rifled 120mm guns had a coaxial L6A1 range finding machine gun in .50 BMG before laser range finders came into use. This was a modified M2HB with a greatly reduced rate of fire and an adapted cartridge with a projectile like the American 12.7 x 77mm.
In the WT-Wiki this spotting MG is called L21A1, but this British designation was not given to such a weapon.
