5 degrees gun depression got me depressed

I’m finally grinding out higher rank Russian tanks again, which means playing T series tanks with awful reverse and basically half the gun depression of most NATO tanks. Coming from Germany and playing the leopards and finally getting half decent at GRB pretty much 80% of the spots that a leopard can dominate in with the good reverse, and gun depression is absolutely dreadful in something like a t72 or t80.

The match that got me to even make this thread im trying to play it here on spaceport, I love this spot on the leopards, its absolutely amazing place to play this map.

But the hills here just do not work with 5 degrees of depression, you will die before you even get guns on most times, you’ll get flank and bullied because you can’t really duel people that barely show the top half of their turret when firing on you… it sucks.

Playing aggressive in this game is absolute suicide, or just waiting to die to people camping these spots like im showing above. Im at the point where I have to remind myself it is NEVER worth it to cap a point in this game because 99% of the time it puts you in a bad posistion, it lets the whole team know where you are at, and you will probably just eat it when you try to leave the cap.

Spots like these work, and because you are low profile these spots really only work with russian tanks

Spoiler

It has a gentle enough slope that 5 degrees works, it might not look like it but im behind cover enough that fast velocity rounds aren’t going to touch me and only someone looking at that spot exactly with thermals might catch my commander sight or radio wires to know im there, and it has a good sightline, its hard to flank without being heard, but these spots are hard to find, and im guessing not nearly as numerous as ones applicable to 9 degrees of depression.

How are people playing Russian T series tanks and doing consistently well with them? I feel confident playing leos, but I just can’t grasp how anyone plays these and it isn’t just a massive dice roll playing aggressively and waiting to die to someone playing a meta spot eventually. 2S38 and 2S25M have been the best experiences I’ve had, just because at least they can reverse quickly and that opens up playing behind hard cover like buildings without immediately dying if you don’t kill them outright or take their gun out, or exposing yourself too long to a 3rd party. But not all maps are great for this some don’t have any.

Maybe to reiterate a bit of my frustration here, im not doing absolutely awful in these, im probably 1-2kd on them, but I keep finding myself in situations where I don’t feel like I have any control. Meaning the only way I die is if I do something wrong, getting greedy, having poor situational awareness, missing shots etc. A lot of matches I just feel like I don’t know what I am doing, and when you die in these situations you can’t learn from your mistakes and if you can’t be conscious of what you are doing wrong you can’t improve at the game, only get mad.

In my experience, playing the T-72s requires you to path your movement in such a way where you peak the ridge/whatever cover by driving behind it and finding a piece of terrain that allows you to look past the cover without exposing too much, but without actually driving on said piece of hill/cover/whatever.

I will try to find an example if this explanation does not work for you

Just wait until you play low tier Britain. The only way I kept my sanity for Russia was playing Britain first

The only thing keeping me sane is the fact that you don’t really have to do a whole lot to get your max rewards from a match, so at least im grinding at basically the same pace getting 3-4 kills and a cap or a few assists than getting 10+ kill games every match. Trying to keep up with 2 TT is enough for me I don’t think ill play anything but germany and russia for now.

Naw I get it, but just having a hard time finding all these spots as im working from scratch from my experience with Germany.

Its a lot of moving around maps while avoiding hills.

You can push hills but only when you have time to crest the hill.

and then, usually the best option is to W key into the next piece of cover/depression rather than trying to back up

Very true. Russia and Britain switch the “what is a reverse gear?” Role

The BMP-2M makes me want to jump off a bridge everytime i’m standing on a lil pebble
It got me rotating around like i got a seizure just trying to find some flat ground

Play along the flat area, stay low in basins or the worst slopes (>11deg) so that leo depression won’t have any use. -5 is not -3, it’s useable in most cases and won’t be that frustrating 9/10deg where one will need specific slopes to actually make it better than 5deg.

GL smashing every single leo2 with one of our lovely Mango!

Those tanks are pretty one dimensional, it’s basically a W-holding simulator while having your fingers crossed your armor is going to save you in your brainless rushes. In most cases the slower you play them, the worse they become.

SU-122-54 has only 4 degrees of depression. Unless the map is a city map, better have 3 other good vehicles in the garage.

IDK ive tried playing like that it never goes well sure maybe you get a kill but holding W is just waiting to die. People at 10.0+ are usually not complete garbage and will take out your breach or barrel first shot and then its game over if you aren’t in a defensive spot where you can immediately crawl back into cover.

Playing defensively with 5 degrees gun depression, worse vertical targeting than ww2 hand cranked tanks, and abysmal reverse is basically just hoping the other team is bad.

10.3 russian teams have been awful the past few days, half of my matches is the other team running full court press into our spawn within 2-3 minutes and I try not to play around my team or complain about it but Its hard to do anything 1v3 etc every time, you get your gun taken out and you’ll just get ran down like a dog because there is no one keeping them in check. I think in 20 matches tonight I had about a 30% WR maybe.

I still cant grasp how to play these, and every single match there is an instance were 9/10 degrees of gun depression would have netted me a kill, or saved me. Or not having shit reverse. Or a giant pintel mount gun on top of every tank that nets anyone with enough of a brain to load heat and shoot it for a kill while im behind cover that I can’t hide that.

I catch myself taking bad shots, being too aggressive for no reason and dying, thats fine. But I just have these matches were i feel completely helpless do anything against tanks with depression and I have no idea what to do. Peaking them is suicide, trying to flank around when they have sightlines on everything, and my team is eating it so I’m stuck on my side of the map just feels bad.

An example is here on fulda, there was 4 swedish/german tanks on that 4 mark just farming my team, entire middle of the map is on complete lockdown and none of us can challenge them because of their depression here, C was hopeless because we had no prescence there an im not solo spawning there to fight 1vX, all I can do is push A on the side of the map but its a giant open space on the way to the cap with no cover while their team sits on cap waiting for us to come. I can either sit and hold an angle on A and wait for potentially minutes for them to get bored and leave cover, or hold W and hope the best. Honestly half my matches are like this. If I was in a leo 2 at least I could try to contest them at mid, absolutely pointless in a t72/80.

Katyusha with 7 degrees. And no, not -7 degrees.

I was gonna say the khrisantema has more, at least it feels like it, but i checked in game and its 5 lol.

The optics have more

6* degrees looking directly forward on T-80 and T-72, and yes 5 degrees from turret ring.

try climbing a mountain backwards to unlock full potential

BVM is probably the best tank to do this with as it’s pretty fast while having competitive gun handling and okay reload speed.

T-80U is just BVM but worse in every regard, it even has K5 on UFP so in some cases your UFP will get penetrated, thus you can’t rely on your armor as much.

72B3 is yet another K5 tank with even worse reverse speed, reload and mobility in general.

That’s bound to happen in BRs with heavy premium presence like 10.3, which will obviously attract new players.

I’m not a big fan of them because of that as well. Try to find spots that work with your depression and reverse. Obviously you’ll be limited to way less spots, but you can do decent for sure.

This is one of the reasons why I think tanks like that aren’t really new player friendly.

What’s worse, they don’t have flat roofs so most of the times you can shoot at them and kill a crew member + breech, while their barrel still isn’t out of cover, making them even worse at hull down sniping.

Rural hilly maps are a bane of those tanks. Everyone just hides behind a defilade, scan the area in 3rd person, find a target, quickly pop out, shoot and go back to cover.

Tanks with bad gun depression and reverse speed is exactly what you don’t need in that situation.

At least you can be aggressive in urban mazes where there’s enough cover nearby to hide behind even without using the reverse speed. At least in some cases.

how long till china gets -8 gd :3
