40mm Gun Motor Carriage T68.

History.

In 1942, the American Ordnance Company, an old arms manufacturing company in Bridgeport, decided to try its hand at creating an anti-aircraft vehicle. The basis was chosen for the functioning and half-tracked M3 Half-Track vehicle, which was very popular with the US Army. It was planned to mount a single 40 mm Bofors cannon of Swedish origin, which however made the vehicle underperforming given the relatively low resulting firepower. It was therefore decided to mount two weapons in the back of the M3, but there was a drawback: the two weapons could not be mounted next to each other as there was not enough space. It was therefore decided to mount them one on top of the other, an absurd but functional solution. Finally, the weapons balancer was mounted above the two cannons, and this made the vehicle very very high. In December 1942 the vehicle, called 40mm Gun Motor Carriage T68, was tested at the Antiaircraft Artillery Board, without success (the vehicle was very unstable because of the big recoil) which put in June 1943 an end to the experience of this vehicle which was subsequently scrapped.

Armaments and propulsion.

The vehicle was armed with two 40 mm Bofors cannons with an unknown amount of ammunition carried. The weapons had a 360° traverse and could elevate from -2° up to 35°.
The vehicle was powered by a 148 hp White 160AX engine, which could push the vehicle up to a maximum speed of 60 km/h, considering the large increase in weight due to the double armament and the stabilizer.

Can’t see a point to it based on the above.

Easy +1. Looking stupid is the objectively most valid reason to add a vehicle.

It’s so ugly and ridiculous that I don’t care how badly it performs. I want it. +1

What do you mean?

Seems to be a useless based on report

this has to be one of the worst ways I’ve ever seen twin 40mms be mounted on a truck

10/10, would love to flip the truck on the side again

A +1 from me, the US is in desperate need of more AA. Ordnance approval be darned, bring this to the front lines of WT immediately

I suggested it just because I want to see it flipping.
