Permanent Friendly Markers on the Tactical Map for Air Sim - IFF rework

As a dedicated Air Simulator player, I want to address what I believe is the single biggest factor holding back aggressive, enjoyable gameplay in BR 11.0 and below: the complete lack of reliable identification for allied planes, especially those without IFF.

When you are flying an aircraft without IFF, which applies to the vast majority of Rank VII and below, you cannot engage an enemy with any degree of confidence beyond absolute visual range. This forces you into a purely defensive mindset, even when piloting a capable fighter or strike aircraft. Take the USSR BR 11.7 lineup as a prime example. The MiG-27M and MiG-27K carry good R-60M missiles with real offensive potential, yet that potential is almost entirely wasted because you simply cannot risk a launch unless you are close enough to visually confirm the target’s silhouette. You are left hesitating, holding your fire, and ultimately flying to survive rather than to fight. It affects every player who steps into a pre-IFF jet, turning what should be thrilling interception scenarios into anxious guessing games.

We already have a tool for this: the radio command menu, which allows you to ask a teammate for their identification. This is how it usually works:

1.When you hear a location ping, you check the map right away. If that ping is on your position, your immediate response should be to send the ‘Follow me’ radio command. This marks your location, letting the other player know you are friendly.

2.On the other hand, if you send out a ping and receive no reply, do not automatically treat the contact as hostile. The friendly may have missed the ping, be occupied with a dogfight, or simply not know how to respond, or maybe they just do not care.

3.So you are left with no choice but to fall back on visual identification. But if I see an F-104, how do I know which F-104 it is? I do not memorise every single detail of every aircraft variant, and neither do most players.

In theory, the radio system is a good solution. In practice, however, it almost never works. On my server, particularly in SEA, teammates simply do not respond. They may not even bother to learn these commands in the first place. By the time you receive a reply, if you ever do, the engagement opportunity has long since passed. As a result, the only truly safe option left is to avoid player combat entirely and spend the match farming AI ground targets or static bombers. This is exactly why you see so many players in low- and mid-tier Sim matches adopting a purely PvE playstyle. One reason is that PvE carries zero risk of a friendly-fire penalty, whereas a single misidentified missile shot can cost you thousands of Silver Lions.

I would like to propose a simple solution in Air Simulator Battles, friendly aircraft should always be visible on the tactical map. I am not asking for enemy markers, HUD icons, or any form of target tracking that would compromise the immersive fog-of-war that defines Simulator mode. I am asking only for a clear indication of where my teammates are located at any given moment. This would allow a pilot to cross-reference a visual or radar contact against the tactical map, instantly determining whether that is a friendly returning to base or an enemy trying to flank. It would enable pilots to plan their attacks with confidence, knowing they will not accidentally fire into a friendly. It would allow short-range IR missiles like the R-60M or AIM-9L to be used at their intended engagement , rather than forcing players to wait until they are within less than a kilometre for visual identification before pulling the trigger.

It does not reveal any enemy positions whatsoever. It does not simplify radar operation or give players an unfair advantage in situational awareness.

The current state of Air Simulator mode forces a large portion of the player base to fly with their hands tied behind their backs until they reach BR 12.0 or higher, where IFF becomes more common. This is not healthy for the game mode, nor is it fair to the many players who want to engage in dynamic PvP combat but are held back by a purely informational gap. By simply adding permanent friendly markers to the tactical map, we would reduce team-kill frustration, encourage much more aggressive and exciting engagements, and steer the meta away from the “PvE farming” culture that currently dominates the low- to mid-tiers. I genuinely believe this is one of the smallest changes Gaijin could make with the largest positive impact on the Air Sim experience.

This would devalue the sim aspect of Simulator Battles. The whole point of Sim is that you don’t get handed information for free, IFF or not. If you can’t visually confirm a contact, that’s supposed to be a risk you manage through comms, positioning, and situational awareness, not something solved by a permanent map icon. Giving everyone a guaranteed “friend or foe” answer removes one of the few things that still makes Sim feel different from Air RB with a cockpit view slapped on.

Also, planes with a targeting pod or laser targeting, can use the T-6-1 command (air!) to check if the targeted plane in the crosshairs is a friend or foe. I’ve seen it done on the MiG-27 before. (although this can be considered gamebreaking by some)

-1 for me too, as Thomas Belgium said to you can press the “Air Alert” and if you have the plane in your direct line ot will say it’s an Enemy by saying his heading and all that and if it’s just a teammate it will just say "Air Alert " this is not guaranteed but works a lot of times, also you can always press the Follow Me or Defend Me and most teammates usually press it to, now if they not it’s one of the risk and positive for some that you take while playing Sim, Sim is the best game mode for me and I wouldn’t like something se unrealistic as this, in top tier tho with datalink and Link 16 and many others electronics when we finally get bigger maps we will see permanent markers in the Minimap as long as the two planes are compatible

No need for tracking or pod, I have used it in every plane I have played from an Spitfire to a A-4H to the Su-30SM2, and why consider it game breaking as it is a mechanic that prevents a lot of team kills

I’d rather have IFF for hard locks or STT instead

“As a dedicated Air Simulator player”

Might you want to rephrase that? After all, here’s what I think of when I hear words such as ‘dedicated’.

  • Someone plays a lot of something.

  • Someone who plays enough of something to develop a grasp, competency for and general handle on how best things can be improved.

  • A player who knows that the R-60 is a VERY SHORT range missile - so the opportunities for correctly ID’ing a target are significantly easier than say - a long-distance Sparrow shot on a target without IFF.

  • Someone who hasn’t just come out of a match having teamkilled TWO people in their MiG-27K… using the very short-ranged R-60.

Just a few totally unrelated examples…

In case you are wondering - that is an erudite way of saying ‘No.’

If Im not mistaken modern planes have friendly identification in their tactical maps that are displayed in the cockpit? I think that would be enough because you also have the radar identification.

Bro, you don’t even have 200 games in sim…

You mean like a proper implementation of IFF interrogation/NCTR while STT or MTT?

I’d say yes, but only to an extent, maybe within a certain radius of you, and maybe where it only updates every minute or so, as if the pilots were checking in and giving their location, and only on the map, otherwise I’d say no as it would kinda turn it into ARB.

It could work, but with some pretty significant changes.

That.

Just come from an 11.0 match where I was in the Finnish MiG-21, fighting a Russian team. So flying a Fishbed in a Blue team always poses some risk of getting misidentified and TK’ed, but it was really very pleasurable, people communicating well and reliably with only the most basic radio messages and pings, even in merged dogfight situation.

I would really hate if that was taken away. It’s “simplified” enough already…
It IS a challenge, for sure, but that’s part of the joy as well!

…I prefer this, hehe:

I had some of my best dogfights in a Soviet Mig-21 against a Finish one, we both loved it so much that for the rest of the game we would go in a specific part just to dogfight guns only (that’s not against the rules right?)

They should only appear if there is a reason for them to appear. So aircraft with the ability to recieve that information, and potentially even something actually providing that information, like a friendly AWACS or radar station (That could be destroyed and so stop sharing that information)

The better option for lower BRs is for them to overhaul the quick messages, and include a sensible option for asking teammates where they are, could even have a quick reply thing (like “press T for thank you” when someone helps you repair) if someone is within 5-10km.

But teammates just always being visible on map, at any BR, magically, no. Gaijin has already destroyed enough of the immersion in SB of late.

As long as both of you are trying to beat the other, no

If we weren’t it wouldn’t be a dogfight

Exactly, Then your fine.

similar to how we have it in TWS or SRC already

Yes and on the B-Scope on the side on the screen
