History:
Hetman Ivan Mazepa is the first of two Ada class corvettes built by Turkey for the Ukrainian navy, making them the third country to operate the type and the 2nd export operator after Pakistan.
The Ada class corvettes were initially built to replace the Burak class corvettes in Turkish service. They would later be exported to Pakistan as part of a technology transfer, resulting in the Babur class.
The Ukrainian navy since it’s inception had Krivak III class Hetman Sahaidachny serve as it’s flagship. She would carry out port visits, took part in the commentation of the 50th anniversary of D-day, helped international forces in Operation Active Endeavour, and deployed once more in Operation Ocean Shield.
During the full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the crew of Hetman Sahaidachny scuttled her to prevent her capture in Mykolaiv, leading the Ukrainian navy without a flagship, meaning that Hetman Ivan Mazepa would become the Ukrainian flagship.
The procurement goes much further back than the loss of Hetman. After the annexation of Crimea, several large vessels in the Ukrainian navy were captured including 2 Grisha V class vessels. This lead Ukraine to turn to Turkey, eventual leading to an agreement in December 14th 2020 for Ukraine to receive Baykar Bayraktar TB2 drones as well as 2 corvettes with an option for an additional 2.
Hetman Ivan Mazepa would be laid down on the 7th of September 2021 and launched on the 2nd of October 2022. Due to the blockade and ongoing conflict, the ship remains in Turkey despite original plans to be towed to Ukraine for it’s fitting.
Hetman Ivan Mazepa would be spotted in the Sea of Marmara conducting official trials in 2024. During a video honouring the armed forces day, Hetman Ivan Mazepa was spotted with VL MICA launchers, one of it’s primary distinguishing features compared to other Ada class vessels
