Final XF-103 full-scale engineering mockup after completion in 1954.

🇺🇸 Republic XF-103 🇺🇸

Hello all! I’d like to submit an ambitious candidate for the future Dreams Come True event: the Republic XF-103. The Republic XF-103 was an extraordinary American project to develop a Mach 3 interceptor. Development formally began in 1951 and was canceled in 1957. While the aircraft never progressed beyond the mockup stage, with no partially built airframe or assembled powerplant, this suggestion argues that a unique vehicle-specific component was fully built and tested for the XF-103: the escape capsule. It was unique to the XF-103’s cockpit configuration and should be sufficient to warrant it as an (unfinished) prototype.

Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestion! 😃

The escape capsule being purpose-built specifically for the XF-103 (with the B-47 only serving as the drop-test platform, not a prior/shared application like the periscope was) ended up being the deciding factor, satisfying “vehicle-specific parts… were built” and justifying its classification as an unfinished prototype rather than paper. Very cool layout, would love to see this in-game eventually. +1

Big +1,
would be a fun event vehicle.
But how the hell can we balance that, that is a question…

Looks so cool +1

Thank you, very cool! I did not expect it, to be honest.

This vehicle would only have one thing going for it raw speed for its BR. But with nuke mode and the possibility of more heavy bombers it would be fun to see the man in a missile.

Fun fact, a belgian comic published in 1946 called “Le secret de L’espadon” (the secret of the swordfish) from the serie Blake and Mortimer,
the drawer imagined a plane called ‘L’Espadon’, the swordfish in french that looks very closely to this mid 50’s prototype.
Edgar P. Jacob, concerned that his invention might seem implausible, he showed the technical drawings to an expert in naval and aeronautical matters. The expert concluded that “no major obstacle stands in the way of realizing such a project.”
In the comic it is refered to a “triphibious” craft (a submersible, supersonic, and radio-controlled jet aircraft). As well as a ejectable seat going downward.
That’s just ahead of it’s time, remember this is in 1946.
Here is the drawing :

If this comes out, I really want this to be a skin !

For another fun fact, the author had already envisioned a future war in the very same comics, between world powers involving ballistic missiles capable of striking any point on Earth—something that came to pass twenty years later. The enemy country that will shoot all over the world have a symbol that looks like the North Korea flag, even tho it happens 4 years before the start of the Korean War.

I believe Ramjets aren’t modelled yet

This would open a lot of doors for unique interceptor aircraft

It is, Kh31’s have it

It would play very similarly to the MiG-25 but with high potential at extreme altitudes and worse missiles.

According to the SAC, the ramjet cannot run at its maximum efficiency unless it’s above 55,000 ft (16,764 m).

It would be a very interesting future DCT reward, in my opinion.

Although it’s very unique, had special parts built for it, and could have possibly been realized, the fact it wasn’t makes it a no from me.

I don’t this is as an aircraft we need ingame given our surplus of similar options (now I may change my opinion on this point as large scale conflict battles like escalation continue to develop), nor do I think this is a type of vehicle that’d I’d want ingame for the following reason:
I prefer fully built/finished, or least much more finished, prototypes for the game, as I’d rather have them added first and prioritized before we get into this niche category of vehicles someday down the line.

If this comes to the game I wouldn’t be upset, I’d be happy, but it’s my personal opinion this isn’t an aircraft that we need nor do I think should be added in the current state of the game. Really great and detailed suggestion, great work from you as always, happy to see you’re suggestion got through after all since I know you spent quite a bit of time on it!

although its interesting. its just too much of a stretch for me

not only is it being accepted as even a suggestion is a stretch, due to how its Flight Model and armament would be, it would be an absolute pig to balance

wait, I have this exact comic at home (but in BE Dutch, not BE french). Great stuff.

Looks like this one:

if russia can get their mig-25s, why can’t other countries get their super fast “creatures”? +1

well Red Star in circle was not new Yugoslavia had something similar

Spoiler

This jet would probably play closer to the Ye-150 family of aircraft. Those are basically what happens when you take a mig 21 and give it an American diet. They are also the precursor to the 25. The Mig-25 might play similarly to this, but is more comparable to the XF-108 which only made it to the mockup stage. Sort of crazy the 108 was also a 50’s project like the XF-103.

seriously, imagine this thing running down an F-104, launches a missile, the F-104 makes a small maneuver, and the Falcon misses cuz it’s a fucking Falcon

I have all of the Blake and Mortimer at home thanks to my dad haha

You’ll notice that the only few belgians on WT forum answered haha

Idk, +1

Back when NATO was just building stuff. +1

The designer must have seen a pub dartboard and thought, “What if we made it really big and stupid?”
