HISTORY
The ZRN-01 Stokrotka (Daisy) is a mobile light rocket system developed as a joint international project between the Polish defense company WB Group and the Ukrainian state enterprise Artem, alongside SpecTechnoExport under Ukroboronprom. Unveiled for the first time at MSPO 2017 in Kielce, and later showcased at the Arms and Security exhibition in Kyiv, the vehicle was conceived to fulfill an urgent operational need of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Following the proliferation of enemy counter-battery capabilities and anti-aircraft systems during the Donbas conflict, classical aviation tactics became increasingly hazardous. This created a surplus of 80 mm S-8 aviation rockets and B-8V20A pod launchers, prompting Polish and Ukrainian engineers to adapt these unguided air-to-ground assets into a versatile, cost-effective surface-to-air and surface-to-surface point-defense platform.
The system was designed to engage low-flying targets such as reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, and helicopters while retaining the capability to target light armored vehicles, infantry concentrations, command posts, and soft ground targets. The prototype platform utilized a modernized Star 266 6x6 high-mobility truck chassis updated to the Star 266M2 standard by Autobox Innovations, equipped with raised side panels, an armored cabin shield to protect against rocket exhaust gases, and four manually deployable stabilizing jacks. However, the modular artillery unit was designed to be easily mounted onto any suitable truck platform with a minimum payload capacity of 2.5 tons.
Fire control and target tracking were managed through WB Group’s automated TOPAZ fire control software, integrated with an optoelectronic sensor suite and modern digital communications. Mounted on a folding mast on the left arm of the launcher assembly, the GS400 optoelectronic head housed a daylight television camera, a 3rd-generation thermal camera, and a laser rangefinder. In the three-man cab, the operator controlled the system using digital displays, including a DD9620T terminal, a CZS-2FFS-FK control unit, a Fonet internal communication system, and Radmor VHF radios.
The platform’s primary firepower consisted of two 20-tube B-8V20A rotary launchers mounted on an elevated turntable platform with electro-mechanical elevation -10° to +80° and continuous 360° traverse. While standard impact-fuzed S-8 rockets like the RS-80 could be used for ground targets, the primary aerial countermeasure was the Ukrainian-developed RS-80P rocket equipped with a programmable fuze. As the rocket was loaded into the launcher, the TOPAZ FCS programmed the fuze based on data from optoelectronic head, enabling it to detonate right beside fast or agile aerial targets at ranges up to 4000 m to maximize fragmentation destruction. Despite positive reception at defense expos, and its forward-thinking approach to counter-drone warfare, the ZRN-01 Stokrotka remained a technology demonstrator and prototype without entering large-scale serial production.
