Suggestion No.99

Zdravo. I want to suggest a brand new version of the HARPAS, which replaces it’s former search radar with 4 RPS-42 AESA radar screens :)

Description:

Spoiler

The Yugoimport HARPAS is a Serbian hybrid artillery-missile short-range air-defense system mounted on the M-84 main battle tank chassis, meant to protect troops and important objects from aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. It combines two 40 mm L/70 Bofors anti-aircraft guns with four 170mm RLN missiles (two RLN-TK and two RLN-RF), integrates a software-defined short-range tactical RADA RPS-42 radar with a dedicated VSHORAD mode, electro-optical sensors and a domestic command-and-control (C2) system, and provides on-the-move situational awareness and C2/C4I integration. The vehicle carries about 200 rounds for the guns and a 2+2 missile load, has a gun slant firing range of roughly 3.7 km, missile engagement out to about 12km in distance and 8km in altitude, and features radar assisted, laser-computer fire-control with automatic (AI-assisted) target classification; the brochure also lists instrumental radar detection range up to ~30km, instrumental detection height ≤6 km and high-priority target tracking height ≤15km.

History:

Spoiler

Serbia (and previously Yugoslavia) has long maintained anti-aircraft guns and towed defence systems. During the Cold War, typical systems included towed cannon batteries (like the Zastava M55), MANPADS, and radars under Soviet and domestic production.

In the 2010s, Serbia initiated modernization of its short-range air defence with the PASARS-16 programme, developed by the Military Technical Institute (VTI). PASARS-16 combined a Bofors 40mm gun and missiles to replace or augment older towed and static systems. The modernisation included armoured turrets, radar upgrades (notably to the “Giraffe” surveillance radar), integration of different missile types (including Igla and Mistral) and enhancements to crew protection and mobility. The system entered serial production in 2019.

In September 2023, during the Partner defence exhibition in Belgrade, Serbian defence industry unveiled the HARPAS system. HARPAS emerged as a newer project from MTI and associated companies, probably using the experience gained from PASARS-16 and earlier air defence modernization efforts.

A brand new version of the HARPAS was displayed very recently (literally like 2-3 days as of now), where it’s main upgrade appears to be it’s older search radar being replaced by 4 RADA RPS-42 AESA radars.

Armaments:

Spoiler

2x Bofors 40mm cannons with 200 rounds capable of firing HE-T and Proxy HE (unconfirmed to fire AP)

4 RLN missiles (2x RLN-TK + 2x RLN-RF. Range is about 12-15km’s)

4 RPS-42 AESA radar screens

etc. (seen below)

Specifications:

Sadly, there is (still) no info about the HARPAS’s dimensions, weight or engine, therefore I will have to use the M-84A. It has a hull length of 6.96m, a width of 3.46m and a height of 2.19m. It weights around 42t. Powering it is a 1000hp V-46-TK engine. This makes it go up to 65km/h.
