I suggest that for the Yak-17 and similar aircraft that have permanently attached additional (External ) fuel tanks in the game, that they would have similar mechanics as aircraft with drop tanks, only that they would not be disposable, they could be selected either in the modification or armament menu.
These planes could get a minimal but at least some boost in climb rate and turn time
