Since they are already making the models for WW1 aircraft for Aces of Thunder they can easily port them over to War Thunder since they will both be running on the same game engine and Aces is just War Thunder but working VR so it wouldn’t cost them much to do it.
If Aces of Thunder sells like hotcakes because of the WWI aircraft, it’s bound to mean something. Gaijin would likely see it as a signal not to waste the opportunity to expand on this success by bringing full WWI content to War Thunder. It could open up an entirely new era of aviation/ground gameplay and potentially attract a new audience interested in the early history of aviation and ground vehicles before the 1930s.
Since we now have some WW1 tanks in the TT’s now as rewards I think in the future any more WW1 vehicles are going to be added just at the start of the TT’s rather than in separate WW1 TT’s. Seeing this I put together a simple WW1 British aviation TT as rank 0 with 0.0-0.7 BR’s.
Planning on making some more for other nations such as Germany, France, USA etc with the aircraft each nation used throughout WW1 when I have the time to.
The little known “hamilton” or “oakland victoria” tank, a competitor to the ford 3 man tank. It was intended to house a 37mm gun in a rotating turret
Probably the stangest american design of the time that saw any production
Another option to implementation is rank 0 as show this picture (as several people have already suggested here):
Practically the possibility to do research from rank 1 to rank 0, whoever wants to (reverse research - from more modern to less modern). Rank 1 remains the starting tier, so research will not be extended for those who go for more modern machines. The advantages over what is proposed in this thread are that all vehicles remain in their own folders and no additional folders are needed that can be used for other types of machines such as submarines.
This is a much better implementation. Had exactly this in mind when I was playing. Rank 0 alone, though, would probably need new maps. Most of the ones we have in rotation currently are terrible. Not only in aesthetics, but also gameplay wise with the ww1 vehicles. Already hate when this happens in-game, you’re in early 2000 with a pz3 and it just kills any sort of interesting immersion.
I’d like to suggest the possibility of adding an official, permanently available campaign mode for Ground Forces, focused on historical battles. Below are key reasons supporting this idea:
Appeal to Military Enthusiasts: War Thunder’s high realism attracts players deeply interested in military history, many of whom study WWII tactics. Simulating famous battles from both World Wars would significantly engage this audience and draw in similar players.
Technically Feasible: Many tanks in-game saw actual combat in WWII, with fully developed models already implemented. Numerous maps also have real-world prototypes—some even modeled after genuine battlefields. This means a campaign mode could be created with minimal additional development resources.
Proven Success: The 2024 April Fools’ event recreating the Battle of the Somme was exceptionally well-received by players. Making such content permanent—and expanding it with iconic battles like the Battle of Villers-Bocage or Battle of Malinovo—would generate further positive feedback and enrich the game’s long-term value.
Thank you for considering this proposal. We appreciate your time and dedication to War Thunder!
More or less for me I would like to see more maps in the designated era because that would provide the excuse to add the old tanks. The WW1 tanks don’t play that poorly they got the bio robot armour and they got a strategic gameplay eco system
