Work-In-Progress: Regenerative Steering — Should We Add It? Try It & Leave Your Feedback!

Great! I would clarify that only the Regenerative Steering CR2 has the needed hp, if possible! (Sorry if I’m sounding nit picky, I just want everyone to have as clear info as possible hahah)

Speaking of Challenger 2s, have you guys tried the 2E?

Because it’s basically a light tank now xD It has WAY better handling than any other Challenger

The only problem at the moment is like you’ve seen there are a few tanks that can zoom around at high speeds in cities/towns. Like the VT5 or ZTZ96B, even the 2E to some degree.

Of course a C2 shouldn’t have the mobility of a VT5 but still, it would be a bit unbalanced if one tank could just hold W while the other has to use CC and take every corner much more carefully to not understeer too much.

So my point is basically that every tank should be similarly easy to control. Otherwise I wouldn’t mind if tanks would become slower in tighter environments

In fairness, Maginot Line’s town space is very tight, it’s the worst case scenario for any tanks IRL. The map you’re testing has fairly large spaces to manuever way more at slightly higher speeds.

I haven’t tried them but the VT5, ZTZ96B or M41 feel so good to drive that I’m sure they wouldn’t have problems with Maginot either. They just doesn’t have any kind of understeer no matter if it’s low speed or high speed.

Like I’ve said I’m not expecting a C2 to handle like a ZTZ96B but the low speed understeer could be improved. So we’ve arrived at the original problem again: the auto transmission choosing the wrong gear haha If it would choose a lower gear at low speeds you wouldn’t even need CC

I can do a quick test with them, but i can almost guarantee you that within the town space, none of them can make any of the turns at high or medium speeds, only at low speeds and lower gears.

What’s the file name of Maginot? I can’t find it lol

Ah it’s Sector Montmedy

It’s something dumb lol “avg_sector_montmedy”

Either way I just did the testing, I retract my statement about the VT5, but not so much on the Challenger 2E. VT5 has the advantage of it being smaller so it can fit the Maginot town space well but the Challenger 2E still struggles a fair bit more cuz of its length.

Yes but I see some people arent a huge fan of it but I thought of a way that can be added without making it a toggle is by changing a bit on how the controls work so if you are pressing W and A or D at the same time you will use the regenerative steering, but if you to cut forward throttle and press S to brake and turn or just simply A and D and turn it will not use regenerative steering and steer like in live server. You will get best of both worlds without needing to turn a toggle and you just need to know the controls and I feel this can work in console aswell with a controller. It just depends if it is able to be implemented this way and how the devs feel but I would argue it is the best way to go about it.
Even then I feel alot of people would still like there to be a toggle for it.

I mean this just feels so easy to use. I don’t mind something like the C2 being slower obviously but I don’t think people are going to like it if one tank can just zoom around like this while the other needs CC and constant “fighting” to make it take a turn.

But these are really niche situations imo, usually streets are not this tight and even on Maginot you can just play on the other side of the map

Realistically most MBTs don’t even fight in such tight spaces anyway, that’s left to infantry.

That said, it’s only the CR2 so far that struggles the most as of rn.

This works so well it made me look up the steering system for the Stingray just now. It’s not regenerative sadly, but still something that could be interesting in the future.

The Stingray just uses clutch braking in 1st, 2nd and reverse gears, but from third gear onwards it uses a geared steering system instead. Not quite as effective as regenerative steering, but it’d be nice to see more of these different steering types added to the game following regenerative steering.

I’ve been practicing a bit and honestly it’s not even that bad, it just takes a bit to get used to it. Sure sometimes the tank starts speeding up while turning and sometimes the brakes feel super strong but I guess those are bugs, especially the speeding up thing.

And I think the 2E is not even struggling for what it is. It’s actually insane seeing a C2 being this agile even if it’s the E!

The tight corners are what does it for the 2E really, the VT5 just zooms across em no issues while holding down W.

Interestingly the M10 Booker doesn’t even come close to the VT5 even though they have similar weight and power. The Booker actually feels like an MBT

I wouldn’t say that, VT5 is 5 tons lighter and has 5.4 hp/t more. Thats a very significant difference.

It’s all about the way the transmission is modelled actually

This should be a feature for EVERY tank, period. No toggleable, always enabled.

So I’m sure you play with grass in gunnersight, and don’t use the the tank barrel perspective right
