Work-In-Progress: Regenerative Steering — Should We Add It? Try It & Leave Your Feedback!

I have stated, several times, clearly, that I am not against the implementation of this system in an improved state aslong as it’s made optional for use.

I dislike it personally, but I also see why people like it and do not want to discard it as a whole based on what is clearly a heavily disfunctional state of it on DEV.
At the same time, I (and nobody else for that sake) can tell how a “final” system would look like, what mechanics would be altered/added in addition to go along with and improve it.

Thus, imo, the option to toggle it is a mandatory component of any implementation.

Not every modern tank can use separate brakes for separate tracks and thus increase its turn, iirc.

Yes!!!
Finally a proper system for steering, especially for Type 10s

@Boeing_Fan stated in the dev post even.

No physical clutches on “most” systems. On some there will be, I would expect. And all that will be based on actual descriptions of tank transmission.

This, I agree 200%

Hello. I have tried the regenerative steering on the dev server and have some feedback.

First, the videos I recorded showing how it works right now:

(type 10 was the first one i tried so most of it is just playing around, type 90’s is more objective)

It’s great when you are moving and want to change direction while not losing speed, after all that’s the goal of regenerative steering. However the issue of being unable to perform tight turns has emerged, especially when compared to a tank that has not undergone this change:

But the solution seems fairly simple to me. When a player is hold W and A for example, it will work exactly as it does now and maintains speed while turning. However if a player lets go of W/only presses A, then it will activate the brakes on that side, leading to a tight turn like before. With this we can have the best of both worlds.
If independent braking is not available, then the gear changes when holding just A/D should be limited to prevent a speed increase and keep the turn radius small.

Other issues:

-the automatic gear change logic. On the Type 90 video especially you can see that when already moving, when holding A/D, the tank will rapidly accelerate and shift up into 5th gear, where it will be “stuck”, leading to a very wide turn even when you started at a much lower speed;

-when already turning with just A/D, pressing W will quickly increase your speed and widen the turn, but pressing S will not slow you down while turning, it will lock both tracks and stop you in place. This isn’t a big issue but it’s pretty annoying and could be improved.

Overall I think is is a good change, but needs just a little more work to really be a complete upgrade.

Gaijin, please restrict the poll to people that actually tested this on dev.

We do not need a recreation of the APHE vote situation where an objectively good thing got a 51% no because a youtuber screwed it up

Yup, this is the logical way it should be handled. Holding W+A/D does regenerative steering while letting go of W and pressing A/D does clutch breaking.

On… tanks without clutch steering? Guys, the brake steering, clutch steering WT has right now was a placeholder cuz they never implemented modern transmission systems and thus just made everyone use old one from 1930s.

I do not understand how do you want to have it toggleable. Its like a reversible transmission. You either can go backwards -60km/h or your gearbox can’t do that. How can you toggle it…

I don’t remember all the technicalities, I’m not a mechanic lol. But you get what I mean.

It would help more if Gaijin actually made a list which tanks would have witch steering system or something. At least for modern toptier tanks for now.

Instead of just saying that most can’t steer with brakes. What are these “most” and what can?

My suggestion is for those tanks to simply limit the gear upshift logic, keeping the speed low for a tight turn.

Yeah, gaijin should just fix automatic gearshift they have as a default turned on toggle.

On manual, if you know what to do, your can steer wonderfully. Its just an automatic transmission/gearbox tuning issue.

For some reason it starts to lower the gear only when you slow down to 10km/h or less, idk.

When they will tune it and also fix some bugs - I would expect then to have a poll or something. Cuz players will see a normally-working movement.

Parkour!

But seriously, look how well the Type 10 maintains it’s speed, it never goes below 20 km/h and quickly goes up above 30. Sure right now you can make a 180 turn tighter or faster I guess but you come to a complete stop. With regen steering you don’t even have to stop and a moving target is always more difficult to hit

I showed that in the videos I included, getting Type 90 to make a tight turn around a house was just not happening. Modern MBTs have so much power that they will quickly accelerate to ~25kph and go no lower unless you started from a stop.

Love it
but as others said make it toggleable so the people who actually want it can still have it instead of canning it entirely

Including WW2 vehicles that had it? Some Shermans, Churchill, Tiger 2?

is fine to be in the game… BUT… should have a button like the airplanes have for the maneuvering on/off…
if come as it is … never get in the game…

Please add this feature. Me and other players have been waiting so long for it. It makes a lot of MBT’s and heavy tanks so much more mobile.

I think its a great mechanic to add but it is very important to make it work from 4th Gear and above or lets say 35-40kp/h and above. Currently its already working from first gear which makes it almost impossible to take tight corners. Currently you have to break until you stand still and then turn. This makes it impossible to fight in city environments where every corner is tight. So my solution would provide the tank to keep its speed when you actually want to drive fast and still be able to take tight turns when you are below a certain speed.
