the hammer isnt all that, its just a rocket boosted glide bomb, it would get beaten out by a AGM-84H or K or most high-subsonic cruise missiles with IR seekers
the KH-38MT is hard because its just Russian doctrine differences, there isnt really a counterpart for it besides maybe a AGM-88G AARGM-ER or AGM-88J SiAW for general use
iirc JAGM-F is MMW/SAL, while JAGM-MR is MMW/SAL/NIR, so the only one that could come is a restricted SAL seeker, which isn’t contemporary to Kh-38MT and the Hammers (FnF version) like the original post suggests. I wouldn’t mind that version coming, but it would be more equivalent to the SAL Brimstones than Kh-38 or Hammer, and wouldn’t be FnF which is what US CAS lacks arguably (no SPICE, Mavericks are vulnerable and can’t carry a lot, etc. etc.)
Yeah good point. I was wrong that the IR JAGM-F wing launched version is in game. The laser is though so if it was added it would be a laser only hellfire… yuck. But it could go on the farthest hornet wing pod so maybe not so bad?
I looked it up and the JAGM-F is a strengthened version to resist the forces it has during flight and eject/launch and some software tweaks. While the JAGM-MR isn’t in full scale production or fully approved it was being touted as enhancing precision over the initial JAGM.
Wouldn’t be surprised if we hear about a JAGM-F with tri mode in the next year or two as LM is saying they are “investing” in enhancing the product line for the future. It’s already getting put in vertical launch pods and shooting down drones.
Would be very cool, but for now it’d just be an American equivalent to Brimstones, which aren’t exactly great since most good CAS aircrafts with Brimstones have SPICE 250 too (iirc, specifically Eurofighters and Gripen E)
Either way, more American CAS would be sweet. Ideally MMW so we can also have Hellfire-Ls which can be mounted on aircraft I believe too?
Would also help other NATO aircraft not in the US that are lacking good FnF (eg in the Japanese tree)
