Why is the iris-t so hilariously bad at taking down incoming missiles?

From the time I’ve played the iris-t, I’ve noticed quite the interesting problem - the missile HATES tracking incoming missiles, doesn’t matter if it’s a LMUR, AGM-65, kh-38MT or JAGM. I genuinly have no clue why this is, but the IRIS-T will, out of 10 missiles coming in at 8kms, hit like 1 or 2 if you’re lucky. This could be, because the IR seeker never actually tracks the missile, from what I’ve seen on sensor view, but it’s just a DL track, which on the iris-T due to it’s lack of a tracking radar is extremely inaccurate. I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. If someone has questions, I’d happily share clips of the missiles just flying past the incoming missiles.

My theory is that missiles dont actually have a heat signiture in game. Once their motor stops, they are invisible to IR missile seekers.

One question: don’t the Iris-T and Nasams also have radar guidance?

The Iris-T and aim9X are IR guided. They do have DL with your radar but they dont update super fast along side the radar having some issues with soft locks so there is a chance of the missile drifting enough to miss.

Yes and No? I think.

Heat Signatures are mostly based upon thrust, so once the missile stops burning, they become a lot colder. But iirc, they did add aerodynamic heating so that missiles could actually be targeted by SAMs. But i guess that the heat sig is really low and they are really easy spoofed. Though I do also think that they just screwed with SAMs loads and they just tend to miss because the code is working from a level launch at higher speeds and not vertical launch from stationary and it just breaks

That works for IR missiles.
IRIST is an (I)IR missile. It has two channels, MWIR and LWIR.
Roughly, MWIR tracks exhaust, while LWIR tracks airframe (and its shape), which is why it’s very difficult to jam it with a flare. So, say, 38MT coming in at M2. It has a stagnation point temperature of about 250°C in ISA conditions. It’s a LWIR Christmas in terms of contrast and the missile should be able to pick it up, clearly at a max distance.

They dont model the seeker to work like how it does irl. Pretty sure it is just modeled as a FoV shrinkage.

I think that is the case too. The vertical launch messes it up. And the stationary launch in a thrust vectoring missile like the aim9X is awful for the auto pilot. Thrust vectoring missiles in game hate any launch below like 600kph.

Basically. The IRCCM should work from further out and be all-aspect at least.

R-73 is basically only works in rear aspect from no more than 2.5-3km out.

FoV and suspension, just like helicopter aam’s for ex (but better at both) (ingame ofc)
