Why did I end up with this teamkill? Isn't the RB71 SARH missile supposed to exclusively follow the plane radar?

I tried to save my squadmate… but ended up blowing him up instead. The wiki says this missile needs a lock all the way to the target, and I take from that that it doesn’t actually use any radar of it’s own. This one did however go straight for the teamkill, even though I clearly had the enemy radar locked, and my teammate was outside of the radar cone.

Is it something here I don’t understand correctly, or is this perhaps a bug?

The radar return of the F4 was stronger. So basically the radar cone on the mig represents the focused portion of the radar beam when locking, but the radar is still beaming all around it, so because the f-4 is much larger than the mig and you are so close the unfocused beam return is slightly stronger than the return of the focused beam on the mig so the missile seeker went for the f4. (that’s how i understand it afaik, i could be wrong tho)

Yeah, that can make sense. If the game does actually model the radar as active outside of the cone and it is far less focused than what I believed. The Phantom does show it’s whole underbelly, while the MIG shows it’s smaller side profile.

The game needs better information about this though. Until this happened I was “sure” that this couldn’t lead to a teamkill.

If u see this happening break the lock that might save your teammate
