I’d like to get my hands on the LVT(A)-4 and I know it was an event vehicle in 2020.
Can anyone tell me how I can go about getting one?

If you meant original LVT(A)-4 with 75mm howitzer on USA TT, which was released in the 2020 Victory Day event in May.
It is currently unable to get it.
You might pray for it to become a possible battlepass reward (38LV trophy box contains 4 inaccessible vehicles, 3 from the former battle pass season, and 1 from another event)
Or farm tons of SL and gamble during gamble season.
If you meant LVT(A)-4 with 57mm ZiS-2, which was an event vehicle in 2017, you can buy it from Gaijin market at a high price, or you can just play Chinese TT and get the tech-tree version of that.

Yes, it is currently unable to get it, just like the other two vehicles (TKA-412(was 106), modified G-5 torpedo boat for heavier firepower/Swordfish Mk II) in the same event
You could grab it when Gaijin republishes it as a battlepass 38lv reward, but you need to be lucky even if Gaijin added LVT in the box, because it guarantees 1 of 4 possible rewards, and you can get what you don’t want.

Would it be possible to buy one if someone put theirs up for sale?

nah, none of those three were tradeable, so you can’t.
If we consider what if it was tradeable just for arguing’s sake, [I told you that it can’t at earlier]
Its cost will be insanely high.
