What to Expect for the AIM-120D AMRAAM

IRL it means the missile always keeps talking to the radar even when it goes active, even if the radar is not tracking that target, meaning it can also use the data from other radars to boot.

In game it just removes IOG drift, which is useless by comparison.

Currently all active missiles will no longer get radar data once they go active as that value is set to false, the D included. Ironically, the missiles that have this set to true are the likes of the R-2X series missiles and the AIM-7P.

If you ever wondered why those R-27ERs track so absurdly well, thats your answer, its getting IOG data from the radar all the way to the target, not just SARH guidance, same with the AIM-7P.

Interesting that’s what I thought still happened with the D. Especially since IIRC the guidance (in real life) is sent via the radar itself. So if you go cold then re-engage you can reconnect.

It SEEMS to do FAR better than the other ones versus helis. But that’s probably because they are slow so the GPS/IOG is still looking at where they last saw it. Whatever it sucks just a tiny bit less than previously, I’m not mad.

That would indeed be the case, for helis at longer ranges, that drift does become a issue as its not continually correcting unlike a fixed wing which forces the missile to correct repeatedly, thus fixing the IOG drift.

In a sense, as long as the ARH has not gone active but the target is outside of it’s seeker cone, the radar corrects the IOG drift, helis by comparison commonly loiter, thus, the target remains inside of seeker cone and does not get that correction, meaning the IOG drift normally has time to actually grow to be a issue.

The D, not having such drift thusly deals with those slow and stationary targets far better.

Funny bit about such too, as stated prior, even if the target has a bad SARH track post launch, that IOG data transmission is also why the AIM-7P and R-2X series missiles paddle helicopters compared to normal SARH missiles.

If that one value was turned to true on the D I would genuinely call it a upgrade over the C-5 since it would SUBSTANTIALLY improve it’s guidance at all points in the flight and make it exceedingly hard to avoid as long as your main radar maintains a target track.

But it is what it is sadly.

That would be a good addition because kinematically the missile is straight garbage compared to other missiles and even it’s previous versions.
To make it unique versus other nations missiles, improved guidance would be nice.
