When I just started out and haven’t unlocked heavy tanks in USSR, they looked invincible to me. I couldn’t destroy a single one. It was all ricochet and non-pen for me. Especially the KV-1. But then, when I finally unlock the KV-1, I can’t seem to make use of it. I die way too easily, and even get my frontal armour penned somehow.
Some people said, that the machine gun port and the driver’s slit can be weak points in the front, but I also treid firing in those spots and nothing happened. I have no idea how I’m playing heavy tanks wrong?
The way to play KV tanks is to keep sligthly angled and anytime you come up on an enemy to wiggle your hull and/or turret so they cannot get a clear shot.
The driver port is the main weakspot even on uparmoured variants but the turret front is a volumetric hellhole where shell that should pen just disappear because they hit more than one plate.
Side on you are screwed if they can pen you and know where to aim. You can get lucky and your fuel tank eats the shrapnel.
Any specific tank you are having issues with?
Mostly German tanks are the ones who manage to kill me, maybe because of their strong guns. And I did hear that the driver port is the weak point. But, I managed to hit it once with pinpoint accuracy and it didn’t do anything. Which parts of the side are the weak points? I remember hitting a KV–1 from the side and behind and still not getting pen.
And one more problem I’m facing is, I don’t know exactly where it will pen. I remember the tutorial said that green will pen, red will non-pen. But, occassionally I managed to destroy a pen even when my crosshair showed red on target. And when someone shoots me at a place that obviously should be non-pen, I die.
dont play like you have armour and never expect to survive a hit. even if you know you should be safe, the penetration calclulator does just give up at times
Probably the german long 75.
What tabk were you using to shoot at the driver port? Also you might have not hit the driver port centrally enoigh and the shell grazed the plate and because volumetric is bullshit it just did not pen. It happens often if you don’t hit the center.
Side on the best part is to hit below the tracks in front of the turret. Because just under the turret are the fuel tanks. You can check the x ray in the hangar to see where the fuel tanks are.
You can always check armour in the hangar and see where you can shoot to pen.
Regarding the enemies I cannot say much you would just have to check the hit analysis after the battle.
ah yes the MG-75mm. Insane that gaijin thought it needed a second shaved off the reload speed.
Hello!
It is not only about you, I think this is quite common in general. Whenever you encounter tank “A” for the first, second, third time, it may cause a lot of trouble to penetrate or even destroy such. When you manage to play this particular tank, the proper process of learning begins. Battle after battle after battle you will see, where people are shooting, where they are bouncing and where they are penetrating. Always try to remember each shot that finished you and for the next time - cover this specific weak spot. This learning process won’t take a day or two, sometimes it takes weeks to master the vehicle or specific branch in tech tree.
As some people mentioned here, try to angle your hull, 45 degrees at best, do not overangle, otherwise your weaker side will be too exposed. You can always angle your turret a bit, it also helps, making it hard for enemies to shoot in the cheeks and will give you some extra milimeters of armor. To make it EVEN harder, you can always wiggle your tank when on reload.
If you ever feel hopeless, do not surrender, click this big, red, “Battle” button and try again! Maybe this time it will be your super lucky moment. If you would like to hear some more advices on how to play, manage, positon yourself, leave me a message, we can do some training rooms, I can analize your replays and I will try to help you survive longer and do more in battles. Got some good portfolio on it :)
Stay safe!
Thanks!. It seems I picked the wrong nation from the start. I heard everyone say there’s bias towards the USSR vehicles, yet every German tank feels way more powerful in its respective ranking.
It’s just that the german tanks get actually good penetrating gins early. The tanks themselves are really not that strong.
Pretty sure they’re super strong too. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve managed to even pen a Tiger, Panther or VK-3002, much less kill them.
What are you shooting those with? You should not be facing them with the same vehicles you face KV-1s with anyway
APHE and AP rounds. The rounds seem to be the same for USSR for that ranking range. And the tier where I unlock KV-1S and T-34-57 is when theses guys seem to start showing up, but I don’t think these can be defeated until you get early Cold War vehicles.
Yeah that tells me pretty much nothing.
If you use the short 76mm guns on the soviet tanks you should have no issues going through them from the sides. The tiger H can also easily be kulled through the commander cupola.
Kv 1s is 4.3 afaik and the t-34-57 should not have issues dealing with tigers or panthers. Tigers have a flat front armour that can be easily penned and the panthers can easily be shot through the mantlet.
Mainly can you just tell me which vehicles you use in your lineup?
Right now, I’m using the T-34 1940, T-34 1942 and KV-1S.
And idk how much of a difference it makes, but I exclusively use APHE rounds. I tried using AP rounds but their pen capabilities don’t seem that much better than APHEs and they can’t kill the crew after penetration most of the time. And I gotta keep my shell count low.
Yeah solid AP is not really any better for soviet tanks so keep using aphe.
Your current lineup is not doing you any favours ngl. The 1940 T-34 is 3.7 for a reason (it has a shit gun). And you are just unnecessarily uptiering your 4.0 1942 to 4.3.
The best way for making lineups is usually to keep as many vehicles of the same BR in it. If you only have 1 vehicle at 0.3 hogher it’s not worth it unless you are sure you can use the lower vehicles effectively which seems to not be the case here.
But even with this lineup you should not be facing any tigers or panthers (except the vk 3002 which has bad armour anyway)
I’m unlocking the T-34-57 and KV1-85, I have the ASU-57 unlocked but it is really bad, so I don’t use it. So, I’m sort of in an awkward position.
