The Wan cheng 4 Prototype was converted from one of the 60 M48A1 tanks purchased by the Republic of China (Taiwan). It represented Taiwan’s attempt to develop a similar upgrade package for the M48A1 based on the M48A5 tank standard. Only one prototype was ever built.

Introduction

Following its defeat in the Chinese Civil War on the mainland and Hainan, the Kuomintang (KMT) fled to Taiwan. The Taiwan region became a key U.S. ally in East Asia during the late Cold War. Maintaining this strategic ally meant the Republic of China (ROC) would receive substantial U.S. surplus equipment. In 1973, the ROC Army received its first batch of 60 M48A1 Patton tanks. However, from the late 1950s onward, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) introduced the Type 59—a locally produced version of the T-54A—for which the ROC lacked an effective counter. As the U.S. later sought to improve relations with the People’s Republic of China amid the Sino-Soviet split, acquiring advanced tanks like the M48A5 from the U.S. became complex and challenging. Thus, in 1975, the large-scale Wancheng Project was launched to retrofit and upgrade U.S. M48A1 tanks. This initiative was designated Wan cheng 4.
The main improvements of the M48A5 over the M48A1 are three points: the use of the M68 105mm rifled gun, the conversion of the diesel engine, and the new fire control system including infrared night vision and a new optical rangefinder. The Wan Cheng Si (万乘四号) also follows a similar pattern of improvements: the main gun is replaced with a sample M68 105mm rifled gun obtained from the U.S. in the late 1970s, the diesel engine is replaced with a 750 horsepower diesel engine improved by Taiwan, and infrared night vision is added, with a travel lock added at the rear. Although only one prototype was modified, the Taiwan military, adhering to the principle that “a tank I modify according to the M48A5 is an M48A5,” also casually calls this tank an M48A5.
