Volumetric nightmare POLL

i will say volumetric is better than hull break but its still horrible like bad bad bad bad like what do you mean a track link can stop APDFS from a L55 ??? like can we get a new mechanic instead something that works a little better PLEASE or rework it so its less gambling ?

First off, volumetric has nothing to do with tracks stopping rounds.
Tracks have been stopping rounds since ground was introduced to the game and always will.

Now onto the meat:
Tracks are 1.5 - 3 feet thick.
That’s a lot of thickness for a round to go through.
Leopard 2’s track width is 635mm, even with a standard steel alloy modifier of 0.9, that 571mm of thickness with 30mm+ of side armor is enough to stop 3BM60.

Volumetric going away will not change tracks bouncing rounds.

Volumetric didn’t replace Hull Break. That was the “Overpressure” mechanic.
Volumetric was an effort to make penetration calculations more accurate/realistic and eliminate/reduce the tendency for hits to find holes in the vehicle meshes.
Tracks aren’t a very good example for the reason @AlvisWisla mentions. A better one would be the sheet metal fenders and skirts that are modelled in vehicles. These are only a few millimeters thick and IRL would crumple and bend when struck on edge, but volumetric treats the material as inflexible 1000 mm thickness. Volumetric magnifies the problem because the earlier point algorithm, made such interactions (hitting edge on with a one pixel wide projectile, vs one that is 20 to 155 mm wide), much less likely. Its its own bug, not really volumetric’s fault.

The overlapping plate issue is the only thing impacted by volumetric rounds.
However, the overlapping plate issue is a coding reformation issue, not an issue of volumetric itself.

It’s like buying an EV, then finding out your wiring was installed on old standards that aren’t up for the task of charging it. The problem isn’t the EV, but the wiring needs fixed.

volumetric certinally doesn’t help the issue when tracks should blast apart and the shot go straight through

Honestly, tracks should stop more rounds than they currently do. Realistically, the road wheels add a significant amount of protection for front-quartering impacts… currently they are modeled in game with fix values, for example, 20mm. This means they only offer 20mm of protection even if they are hit perpendicular, along the diameter of the road wheel, which should offer a significant amount of protection. This is why the side armor of modern MBTs is so thin, Gunner Heat PC is a game that very accurately portrays this. Quartering shots through tracks are a no-no in that game, but in War Thunder it is a significant weakness. I think all road wheels should be volumetric.

You could definitely argue the armour modifier for tracks is too strong.
0.75x compared to standard homogeneous armoured steel.
Whereas a track is not homogenous remotely.

road wheels sure but not tracks
