Volumetric is just a part of the problem with WT penetration mechanics

15mm armor vs best anti-angle shell type in game in 85mm flavor?
Somehow a non-pen, lmao.

Can ANYONE actually explain how the HELL did this not go through?
85mm APBC vs 15mm armor at maybe 35 degrees (from perpendicular) . Dude was going around corner, I shot him hoping to kill driver/engine/transmission (I don’t have Bkan’s interior memorised) but instead the shell did absolutely nothing and I died as a result.

It’s pretty obvious there, you hit a horizontal plate, the chassis floor above the tracks. This causes the equivalent armor thickness to go into the hundreds of mm RHA.

Armor from the horizontal plate above the track is taken into account.

Found the shot you made:

You’ll pen by avoiding the roof armor of tanks.

So this game is dumb enough to assume shell follows the path od maximum resistance? GJ Gaijoob.

Nope, it doesn’t do that.

Well, it works only in some tanks. And 15mm plate should seriously NOT add that much armor vs 85mm shell in the forst place, as only a small part of the shell is in contact with such plate and shell can penetrate 135mm of armor plate where shell pushes against amror with its entire circumference and the material can NOT be displaced easily.

This specific shot should have never failed. But it did and it added immense amounts of frustration.

It did exactly that, dumbo, followed the path of maximum resistance and got stopped after plowing along 15mm plate for like half a meter or more. Absolutely unrealistic, and tell me, how did it NOT enter the vehicle while doing that

It wouldn’t have bounced/shattered downward if it took the thickest possible route.

It didn’t bounce, if it bounced, it would defeat 15mm side armor.

To stop an 85mm shell with 15mm plate while hitting along its edge, IRL you’d need around 800mm of such plate, and that is assuming the shell never deviates from its path, dumbo.

It’s not something that should ever happen in game.

I can somehow understand 100mm failing vs Tiger I side, because the gamecode is just crap, sponson is 25mm thick and stuff (it would go through IRL easily, but Gaijin is Gaijin)
But 85mm shell vs 15mm armor is just a bad joke.

i mean, the shell is going fast enough that it wouldnt really just go a different path and if it did it would lose functionally all its energy and probably still not do anything as it likely wouldnt be going straight and then wouldnt fuse

That shell would SLIGHTLY deviate from the path and go through.
That’s what happens in every simulation out there.
Also, how would that shell not go through, even if it plowed along the plate below and magically got stopped at certain point it would first penetrate the side armor!

not necessarily, if it hit dead on that seam it would do as pictured, if it only nicked it it would depend on how sturdy the surrounding structure is and if its weak the structure would probably shatter or fold, but if its strong the round would die

you have an example simulation of this situation?

but it wouldnt necessarily detonate

Nope, this. Again, it would slightly deviate.
There are NEVER equal forces, but in most cases there’s just RHA in all directions.
Here shell has RHA on one side and thin air in the other.
There’s no realistic scenario where this shall does not enter.

And like 60% in-game APHE hits would not detonate IRL, due to shell shattering, bad angle and armor being too thin.
But this one struck 15mm armor at a bit of an angle with most of its circumference, so who knows.

Here you can see how the shell happily deviates towards opening because armor is easier to displace in that direction.

Or here, look how sharply it deviates towards optics weakspot.

Vs 15mm plate it would take slightly longer due to lower forces, but it’s not like you lose that much penetration.
85mm shell can basically push a 135mm plug of 85mm diameter through a goddamn 135mm plate and for most of the penetration cycle, it pushes armor into armor.
Vs 15mm plate it pushes vs air, as the remianing armor provides next to no support. Such plate is easily deformed and its material displaced.

Under some.magical conditions, where 85mm shell moves ALONG a 15mm plate of infinite length and width, I expect it to travel at least 1m before stopping.

Always has been.

Yes it would have to hit exactly dead on - the center of hte edge with the center of the nose and no angular difference between the path of the shell and the thickness of the plate, and no minor variations in the plate like it being dented, etc.

Mathematically possible - ludicrous to make it occur in a game.

you know you can bug report it if you have a problem with something like this right?

but also if that shot replay isnt from the server replay its very possible that thats not even what happened

No, its dumb enough to think that the shell wont bend said plate to oblivion and go through, thats a stupidity one cant comprehend. Thats why WoT has “3 caliber rule”
