Visual and Sound Effects for Stock Modules

THE IDEA

hq720

When you unlock a new ground vehicle in Warthunder, you are given it completely stock, and you need to research new Filters, brakes, tracks, maintenance, service and lubrication of mechanisms and eventually unlocking an replacement of the old and worn engine. I came up with this idea to make the feeling of researching these upgrades and replacements a little bit more rewarding and motivating, as well as making the game a little bit more realistic than before without affecting the gameplay to any specific degree! I see little point in splitting this up in 20 separate suggestions, but i believe this fit under one. The idea i am presenting to you here, is to make these specific parts before unlocked and purchased, to be given sounds and visual effects to them, which will largely disappear when the modification and or service and lubrication has been unlocked and purchased.

The tracks
When the tracks haven’t been lubricated or tensioned in a while, and have overall been worn, this will start to make noises, these noises will be squeaking, sharp scraping sounds and will also make loud popping or cracking noises. In the video below under the spoiler folder there is two youtube videos showing some of these sounds. Excavator tracks are obviously quite different from tank tracks, but they share many similarities, among them these sounds. It’s not too easy to find recordings of tanks with these sounds overall.

The suspension
When suspension is worn, and eventually broken, they start to make a lot of noise. These noises can be clunking, rattling, squeaking, and creaking, and will heavily depend on the speed of the vehicle and on the terrain, the way it should be in-game. Below in the spoiler folder are examples of these sounds, this video features a car, but shares the basic sounds.

The brakes
There are many kinds of brakes especially on tanks, where it varies from drive-train brakes, friction brakes, multi-stage hydraulic braking systems and so on. These do all share some similarities when it comes to them starting to get worn or badly maintained, these sounds can be squealing, grinding, clicking, or gargling or some weird unique scraping sounds. That’s why they in-game should have noises when you are using the brakes before this modification is researched. I don’t know if this would be a different suggestion, but when brakes are worn and not optimized, it can pull to the sides, it can brake too hard and sudden as well as being too weak and you roll much further than you should, but this might be a mechanic and be a different suggestion. Below in the folder are some videos of these brake sounds.

Hydraulic brakes can sometimes sound like this, however much deeper and in some cases louder. Some ifv’s would feature this.

The Filters
Old and worn air filters restricts airflow to the engine, this would in turn reduce the engine power and performance as well as it would increase the emissions of black smoke, unburnt fuel. This can cause high and rough idle, misfires and making it very easily to stall, the smoke and sot will slowly clog everything and make it worse and worse over time. This combined with the old and worn engine would make it even further unreliable and significantly increase the smoke emissions, the way it should be implemented. below are some pictures.

The Transmission
An worn or poorly maintained transmission will make noises, such as Whining, humming, or buzzing, and also grinding while shifting gears, as it can be harder to get it in gear, particularly on manual transmissions. This could be some random sound effects while driving the vehicle before this upgrade is reached.

The Engine
Old and worn engines will have bad gaskets, leak oil and much else, and this will heavily affect performance and power. it will also cause a lot of smoke due to both unburnt fuel and oil in the cylinders, this combined with bad filters would make it worse, and it should smoke quite a bit more upon revving and regular driving, in some cases even when idle. When new filters are added it should be a little less, but this might not be worth considering as the difference would be minimal visually. Diverse variable sounds would also be present, with deep rumbling/throaty roars, distinct pops/backfires, to metallic ticking/tapping (worn valvetrain/low oil) or knocking/pinging (bearing/combustion issues), along with potential squeals/whistles (belts/hoses) and grinding/rattling (bearings, loose parts) and so on, much of which could be part of a sound rotation to randomly play at different rpm’s and times throughout the drive/battle. The color would vary between black, grey and blue and mixtures of these.

Horizontal drive, adjustment of fire and elevation mechanism
Poorly greased joints and gears will make sounds, sometimes more than others, and i believe this would be cool to be featured in-game. Below are an perfect example on how stuff like this will sound when not greased enough, the sounds varies obsviously on the size and kind of vehicle, for most vehicles in game would be lower sounds and longer.
