Currently in game, equipping certain modifications completely changes a vehicle’s appearance and effectively turns it into a different sub variant. Examples include the BMP-1 turning into the BMP-1P, or the BMP-2 turning into the BMP-2D. However, the vehicle’s name displayed in game remains the old one.
While this doesn’t have a huge impact on gameplay, seeing a T-64BV still labeled as a simple “T-64B” in the hangar or on the battlefield always feels a bit odd.
More importantly, this change could have some practical benefits. For instance, in AB, being able to see the correct vehicle name would let you quickly identify if an enemy T-80 or T-64 is equipped with ERA. In RB, seeing the correct vehicle name in the kill feed would immediately tell you the threat level, you’d know at a glance if that T-80 you just saw in the feed is the base model or the ERA version.
It’s a small quality of life change that would improve immersion and provide useful information at a glance.

This suggestion is specifically about official production modifications—things that actually change the vehicle’s variant. It doesn’t include things like add on track armor, which are more like field modifications done by the crew rather than a different sub model.
The name change could be either more detailed or more concise depending on the case. Take the T-80B for example. It actually has three distinct in game forms:
-
Without modification, it’s the T-80B Obr.1983 (featuring a 30mm applique armor plate)
-
With the ERA modification, it becomes the T-80BV Obr.1984 (the 1983 model fitted with Kontakt-1)
-
The thermals equipped experimental version could be called T-80BV (Agava-2), similar to how we already have T-72AV (TURMS-T)
Following the same logic, a thermals-upgraded T-80U could simply be called T-80UM.
And of course, if you want to keep it simple, you could just stick with T-80B and T-80BV, no years or extra details needed.
[Would you like to see this in-game?]
[Which naming format would you like to see?]
- Full version (T-80B Obr.1983/T-80BV Obr.1984/T-80BV (Agava-2))
- Simple version (T-80B / T-80BV)
- Year only (T-80B Obr.1983 / T-80BV Obr.1984)
- Modification only (T-80B / T-80BV / T-80BV (Agava-2))
- I said no

How many vehicles could this apply to?
Because if it’s only a handful of them then it’s probably not justifiable to build such a game system

I think the best option for the formatting would be a drop down to let people choose in the settings.
So… All of the above for the second poll
If such a system was implemented it would also potentially allow the addition of more variants without adding copypasted vehicles. And we can also make a connection with the suggestion of modifications affecting battle ratings, would allow a lot more variants being added without tons of copypaste…
But even if we don’t go that far, just this would be cool even just for historical accuracy

+1, perhaps this could also apply to the Sakeen?
I agree with this. Give people the option to choose how they view the extensions or to just turn them off if they want. +1

+1, would love to see this in-game. It’s always something that’s slightly irked me about the names technically being incorrect for some vehicles, so this is a great suggestion and I’d love to see more accurate names. Interestingly the game already does this somewhat with a few vehicles like the Yak-9P and Ki-43-I.
I think this idea could be taken a step further - you could apply it to battle ratings, too. “Dynamic Battle Ratings”, where a vehicle’s BR changes depending on its installed modifications - consider, a lower BR for a tank if you haven’t unlocked the best shell. Consider the T-80U, for example. Give it a BR of 11.0 stock, and raise it to 11.7 once you unlock 3BM46. Put the M1A2 SEPv3 at 12.0 stock, and raise it to 12.7 once you unlock TUSK and M829A3.
Players could also lower a vehicle’s BR by uninstalling certain modifications - say you only want to play the T-80B, but not the T-80BV. Personally, when I first unlocked the tank, I thought the ERA looked ugly. So, you uninstall the required mod and the vehicle’s BR (and name) changes accordingly. This would also mean vehicles would have lower BRs stock compared to when they’re spaded, which would go a long way in alleviating “stock syndrome”. This way, the BR reflects the specific capabilities of the vehicle, and makes things a little more fair.
it would be on a good bit of modern aircraft, like F-16C block 50 for example, prior to the update it was a basic C model, but after the update it received its SEAD upgrade package and was renamed the F-16CM block 50, if this goes through it could help cut down the amount of vehicles that only have slight differences due to it being the same aircraft just with a later upgrade package, such as the F-16CM block 50 and F-16CM block 52 PoBIT (PoBIT being an upgrade program done to vipers blocks 40s, 42s, 50s, and 52s), and when in 2028 when the current PoBITs get the AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS which recently finished 1 stage in its testing within said test viper squadron it will end up being yet another new F-16 instead of just being a modification to the current ones, if this passes along with BRs dependent on which modification’s come to the game, it would really cut down on the grind
Suggestion passed to the developers for consideration. o7
