Vedetta (1937?)

The Vedetta-class was a pair of prototype minesweepers built between 1937 and 1938 at the CRDA Shipyards in Trieste (Cantieri Riuniti dell’Adriatico). The goal of the project was to create a steel-hulled minesweeper suitable for mass production; however, the concept was ultimately abandoned after only two units were completed due to their small displacement and underpowered engines.

Despite being rejected for frontline naval minesweeping, its design found a second life with the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Police). It served as the foundation for the Caron-class patrol boats, six of which were built and put into service. These vessels saw intense operational service during World War II, with four of the six ships being lost in action, while the surviving units (Caron and Cotugno) continued serving well into the mid-1950s.

Not much is documented regarding Vedetta’s service history, other than its 1941 reclassification as a submarine chaser (AS 116 Vedetta). It survived the war and was eventually scrapped on 01/06/1951.

While specific details on its anti-submarine armament are scarce, we can estimate a capacity of 32 depth charges. This deduction is based on the specs of the Satta class in its subchaser conversion, which features near-identical specs, including dimensions, displacement, superstructure, armament and is even powered by the same Benz diesel engines as the Vedetta class.

Why I’m proposing her?
Italy’s low-tier coastal tree currently lacks larger, more durable gunboats. AS 116 Vedetta could fill that exact gap: her steel hull, respectable crew size, and potent armament make her an ideal Italian counterpart to vehicles like the Soviet Pr.253L.
