I’ve been wondering if it was worth putting a post on this forum about this, but here goes…
In terms of fuel tanks, I’ve noticed that most of my deaths have been to my fuel tanks exploding. Sometimes it says fuel tanks exploded, even when my ammo gets hit after my fuel tanks. But around 6/10 deaths are due to fuel tanks exploding, not even my ammo getting hit.
I wouldn’t be complaining if this made any sense.
Diesel has a higher flash point than petrol:
“Diesel fuel typically has a flash point between 52°C and 93°C, classifying it as a combustible liquid. In contrast, gasoline has a much lower flash point of approximately -43°C, making it highly flammable. Furthermore, the autoignition temperature—the temperature at which a substance will spontaneously ignite without an external ignition source—of diesel fuel ranges from approximately 210°C to 300°C, depending on its specific composition. This is considerably higher than that of gasoline, further illustrating diesel’s lower volatility. “

-US Army Technical Manual (TM 9-1300-214): Notes that diesel tanks struck by KE penetrators (like APFSDS) may rupture, but diesel rarely ignites unless there’s atomization and a source of ignition.
-NATO STANAG 4242: Describes fuel vulnerability under ballistic impact. Diesel is listed as low ignition probability under kinetic impact without secondary ignition factors (such as electrical hazards).
-Jane’s Armour and Artillery 2005–2006: Notes that internal fires in diesel-fueled vehicles are more commonly caused by HEAT rounds or ammunition cookoff, not KE penetrators.
So, what am I proposing?
Its simple:
Give anything diesel engined its proper characteristics. This means they are less likely to explode compared to petrol engined tanks, and will still protect the crew by catching spall.
Yes, this may mainly benefit USSR tanks, sure, but it will ALSO benefit the:
-US
-South Africa/UK
-Sweden
-Germany
-The UK
-Japan
-Poland
-South Korea
So, what do you think? Should Gaijin reimplement/redevelop diesel fuel tanks to match reality?
- Yea
- Nah

Feel free to comment if i’ve missed anything as well! Any sources would be beneficial too! Thanks :)
