United States “Operation Torch” Roundel with Yellow Outline

Hi everyone. I’d like to suggest one of the other US star insignia roundel variations used on the aircraft during Operation Torch from October 1942 to June 1943 in the North African Theater.

Description

  • Insignia Specification Number 24102-K Variation with yellow outline
  • Insignia Blue No.47, Insignia White No.46, and Identification Yellow No. 48
  • Yellow outlines often vary in thickness
  • Applied to the roundels on the fuselage, underwing, and sometimes overwing
  • Similar to slightly darker-hued British Type A.2 and C.1 roundels’ outermost rings as seen on Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires

History

Beginning on October 1, 1942, the US star insignia roundel with yellow outline was temporarily issued and applied to the aircraft that would participate in the Operation landings during November 1942. The yellow ring was used in a belief that it would reduce incidents of Americans shooting down unfamiliar British aircraft, which could be distinguished by a similar yellow outline on the RAF’s fuselage roundels. The aircraft with yellow-outline roundels aircraft also sometimes applied American flags forward of the roundels in an attempt to dissuade the Vichy French forces from shooting them down. However, this did not provide significant results as friendly fire incidents continued. Consequently, the yellow ring was discontinued by June 1943 when the aircraft switched to using the star insignia with white bars and a red outline.

Real Examples of Application on Aircraft

SBD Dauntless

F4F Wildcat

P-38 Lightning

P-39/P-400 Airacobra

P-40 Warhawk

P-47 Thunderbolt

A-36A Invader/P-51A Mustang

Conclusion | Why it should be in the game

In my opinion, the national star insignia roundel with yellow outline is historically significant and visually appealing. It should be added to War Thunder as a new roundel decal for US aircraft, allowing the users to use this decal and apply it on their aircraft or other vehicles.
