History and service record

Spoiler

Chi Lin, referred after an undetermined point as Tai Yuan was the fourth ship of the Anshan-class (commonly referred as Type 6607 in China) nicknamed by sailors as “The Four Heavenly Kings”. Albeit heavily outdated by the time negotiations on the deal started, it was ultimately decided to buy the ships as a kick starter for the newly born PLAN. So, on October 26th of 1954 China struck the deal for 4 Gnevy-Class destroyers from the Soviet Union, which were renamed to; An Shan, Fu Shun, Chang Chun and Chi Lin. These would mean the foundation for the People’s Liberation Army’s Navy.

Service for the now renamed (and for the sake of consistency) Tai Yuan started in 1955, even though the class were outdated they greatly helped PLAN patrol the territorial waters of China, between Tai Yuan’s feats we have:

13th April of 1962 where along her sister ships she went on the hunt of an American destroyer, the USS De Haven who had been executing patrols near Japan, these patrols were a provocation from the new claims China had on those waters and to recollect intelligence. The confrontation lasted 8 days where USS De Haven’s communications were jammed and it was sent 3 different fire threats. ultimately the American ship left because the intelligence collected hadn’t been as much as expected.

On the 5th of July, 1962 the ship was sent to monitor a US destroyer that had intruded Chinese territorial waters at the east of Qingdao, USS Frank Knox left after 3 days of confrontation.

3rd of May, 1961 where the ship assisted greatly in the search of 3 fishermen at the east of the Chaolian Island, finding them after a day of search.

Seeing the new innovations in naval warfare, PLAN officials ordered the development of the indigenous class Type 051, thus, to gain experience it was decided to use Fu Shun as a testbed for the newly developed HY-1 “Sea Eagle” (海鹰) anti-ship missile, an improved version of the P-15 Soviet missile. Works on Fu Shun started in 1969 and ended in early 1970, the tests were considered a success with 2 missiles launched and being able to hit their intended target, this convinced officials to also retrofit the rest of the class. So, starting from 1970 to 1974 all Four Heavenly Kings were equipped with HY-1 missiles in place of the 2 533mm torpedo launchers.

Ultimately, Tai Yuan who had been renamed to Qingdao (allegedly for how close the old name was to a certain Republic of China’s Navy vessel), and after seeing such an impecable service history, our great hero was dismissed of her duties, being decommissioned on 19th of September of 1991, her name was changed again to Tai Yuan and served as a training ship for the Dailan naval academy, where it now rests as a museum ship.
