Since 1958, the Republic of China Army has received a total of 700 M41A2/A3 light tanks, along with approximately 300 domestically modified M48A3 tanks, which became the main equipment of various armored brigades, tank groups, infantry division tank battalions, corps armored cavalry battalions, and marine corps tank battalions. In 1975, the military attempted to reverse engineer components of the M41 chassis (pure chassis, excluding the cannon, fire control system, engine, and gearbox) to establish tank development capabilities, and successfully produced the first M41 in 1976.
The M41’s copy was renamed the “Domestic-Made Type 65 Light Tank” for distinction. Although the Type 65 was a copy, it featured improvements over the original design. It included an additional layer of anti-ballistic steel plates on both sides of the turret and large side skirts on the tracks. The main gun was the domestically produced M32 76mm tank gun, and the muzzle brake was an arc-shaped design instead of the then-standard T-shaped one. Therefore, the Domestic-Made Type 65 can be considered a precursor to the development of the M41D.

Primary sources aren’t needed, though at least two secondary sources are.
