Tutorial on how to use the new early ATGM with updated physics

OUTDATED!!!, scroll down for most recent
Hello there,
are you frustrated and don’t understand how to use the early ATGM’s anymore with the new physics update?

Tested with BMP-1, BMP-2, Mi-4AV and IT-1

I’m here to quickly enlighten you about how to use them now and what you should keep in mind.
So as of now we all know the ATGM’s have been updated and become near realistic, so you can no longer use early ATGM carriers easily by just aiming at the target and leading. They are now more skill bound and require patience and calm and careful mouse movement, additionally each different ATGM has its own behavior, so you should carefully examine the way it steers functions in test drives. As a example: the BMP-1 and 2 ATGM steers way lesser controlled than as the IT-1 and is therefor harder to control. The ATGM’s now also become more uncontrollable the further they go and could start drifting from right to left and from up to down, to compensate such behavoir its best to aim gently into the opposite direction to make the ATGM drift correctly (especially noticed that on helicopters such as the Mi-4AV).
things to keep in mind

  • some early ATGM have a 5-15 meter start launch where they drop significantly and could hit the floor if aimed too low
  • gently guide the ATGM, as instantly snapping to another target could make the missile wobble and hit something on the way
  • targets on a different elevation from you are now even harder to hit due to the launch drop and that should be kept in mind when shooting a target

This is obviously a huge nerf to all early ATGM carriers, but it additionally makes them skill depended. I’ll write a more advanced guide about it on the War Thunder Wiki later on and update some vehicles guide (as WT writer). This is just a quick review of me testing and playing for 4 days with the new Physics.
I hope people found this helpful :D

For the VAB MEPHISTO, the trajectory of HOT missile is incorrect in launch phase.

I don’t know for other missiles but it possible the massive drop is abnormal too.

yeah i already was thinking that the drop after launch was kind of weird, though at the same time i think that due to it launching and not being at its max speed yet that that makes it drop

It mess up I don’t even want to play ATGM vehicle now because of this

Apparently regular atgms were too fun. Thank you Gaijin, dont you want people to play bmps? I really dont understand this… so sad for people who enjoyed playing them…

It seems that the atgms are really bad, I have been testing the bmp1 missiles and they are quite bad, first you shoot and despite the fact that the shuttle has almost no elevation the missile goes down so that if you have a small unevenness in front of you the missile detonates on the ground and if it were not enough in small corrections the missile does not respond, I aimed at an enemy who was far away putting my sights on one side of the tank and I hit him in a chain, I launched another one aiming at him on the other side, I corrected the sight to aim at the center of the tank and the missile did not move, it continued straight until it hit the other chain. It seems very good to me that they make the missiles realistic, but the first thing is to fix the guidance since the missile does not follow small changes in movement, and then if they make the movement of the missile realistic, they would also have to do the damage of the missile realistic.

I wrote the first guide on the 9M113 Konkurs, i added it to the Wiki of the BMP-2. after correction and aproval i’ ll also add it to the BMP-1 as it also uses it
But as promised here it is.

“with the introduction of the “[[Update “La Royale”|La Royale]]” Update, the physics of ATGM’s have been updated to a more realistic engine. Therefore the 9M113 Konkurs ATGM steers more uncontrollably now. When fired, the 9M113 drops below your aim reticle in the first 15 meters (due to being at at low speed right after launch). After surpassing 15 meters the ATGM will have accelerated enough to fly up and stabilize itself with your aim reticle. Due to this launch drop, its suggested to aim slightly up when firing the ATGM: this will avoid having your ATGM hit the ground or any fences as sometimes that tends to happen. When the ATGM is flying, steer it gently and carefully. Instantly snapping to another target can cause it to uncontrollanbly fly from right to left (or other way around) and hit something on the way or not hit the target at all. It should also be noted that the further the ATGM goes the less controllable it becomes, causing it to go slightly off course off your aim reticle. To counteract this: aim in the opposite direction of where the ATGM is going off course to. If for example its going right up, aim slightly in the left down direction. By doing this your ATGM will align it self again to the point you wish for it to hit.”

soon i’ll write about the BMP-1 Manuel guided one and IT-1. I’ll again copy it and paste it here for everyone to read and learn from.

Thanks for this. I’ve tried aiming slightly higher than the target and still am having trouble. I think being a console player makes this even more difficult.

I’d prefer for Gaijin to just roll back the changes to how ATGMs operate prior to the update.

you are welcome :D
I am simply trying to help everyone with this by investing time into testing and writing helpful tutorials.

Here are the finalized and approved tutorials from the wiki page of the vehicle that i wrote.

BMP-1 + German and 2 ATGM Tutorial

9M14 Malyutka (BMP-1 + German only)
The 9M14 Malyutka ATGM steers very controllably. When fired, the 9M14 drops just slightly above your aim reticle and is not usable in the first 5 metres. After surpassing 5 metres, the ATGM will fly in a straight line without any oscillation or deviation. When using the hand aiming guidance of the ATGM, it is very accurate and flies with minimal error compared to the SACLOS (aim reticle guided) 9M113 Konkurs, that tends to be unpredictable and quite unstable in-flight. You can easily swap from target-to-target with the hand aiming guidance, as it remains steady and doesn’t oscillate. If a target is too close to you, aim slightly below the point you wish to hit. The ATGM will align itself slightly above the aim reticle almost right away, allowing you to hit or eliminate the target at closer range.

9M113 Konkurs (BMP-1 + German and 2)
The 9M113 Konkurs ATGM steers rather unpredictably. When fired, the 9M113 drops below your aim reticle in the first 15 metres (due to being at low speed right after launch). After surpassing 15 metres, the ATGM will have accelerated enough to fly up and stabilize itself with your aim reticle. Due to this launch drop, it is suggested to aim slightly up when firing the ATGM: this will avoid having your ATGM hit the ground or any fences as sometimes that tends to happen. When the ATGM is flying, steer it gently and carefully. Instantly snapping to another target can cause it to oscillate from side-to-side and hit something on the way or miss the target entirely.

I hope this will help out people, i shall now work on the other Soviet ATGM carrying vehicles

P.S im now also gonna copy it to the German one, but you can consider the BMP-1 guide to work for it too.

Type 89 got nerfed hard with the new physics and it was already nerfed several times already in the past. But after the physics update the Type 89 went to being imo one of the worst IFVs in the game. Maybe not as bad as a select few others but still bad. On top of the nerfs it got to the turret rotation, ammo feed, now the missile is so wonky its hard to hit people even at close range.
