Description:
Indonesia’s Rafale B is a twin-seat, twin-engine, delta-canard multirole fighter developed by Dassault Aviation. Indonesia has ordered the Rafale F4 standard, the most advanced production variant currently available, representing a 4.5-generation combat aircraft with significant improvements over the earlier F3R standard. Although the Rafale B was originally designed as a two-seat trainer, it is fully combat-capable and performs the same operational missions as the single-seat Rafale C.

Designed as an omnirole" fighter, the Rafale can conduct multiple missions during a single sortie, including air superiority, beyond-visual-range interception, close air support, deep strike, maritime strike, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and nuclear deterrence (for French service). It is powered by two Safran M88-2 afterburning turbofan engines, enabling a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 (approximately 1,915 km/h) and a ferry range of up to 3,700 km with external fuel tanks.

The Rafale features 14 external hardpoints (13 on the Rafale C) and can carry up to 9,500 kg of external stores, including a wide variety of air-to-air missiles, precision-guided bombs, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, targeting pods, reconnaissance pods, electronic warfare equipment, and external fuel tanks. Indonesia’s Rafales are expected to operate advanced weapons such as the MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, MICA NG air-to-air missile, SCALP-EG long-range cruise missile, AM39 Exocetanti-ship missile, and AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs.

The F4 standard introduces major upgrades over the F3R configuration, including improved sensor fusion, enhanced data links and secure connectivity, more capable electronic warfare through the SPECTRA self-protection suite, upgraded RBE2-AA AESA radar performance, improved front-sector optronics, predictive maintenance systems, and greater interoperability with allied forces. These enhancements significantly improve situational awareness, survivability, and network-centric combat capability, ensuring Indonesia’s Rafale fleet remains effective against modern and emerging threats for decades to come.

Radar:

The Thales RBE2-AA Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar is one of the Rafale F4’s most significant technological upgrades, providing greater detection range, faster target tracking, and improved resistance to electronic jamming.

For the F4 standard the RBE2-AA received enhanced software, signal processing, and sensor fusion capabilities. These upgrades improve the radar’s ability to detect smaller and low-observable targets, produce higher-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery for precision ground mapping, and integrate more effectively with the SPECTRA electronic warfare suite and secure data links. Together, these improvements enable Rafale pilots to identify threats earlier, share targeting information in real time with allied forces, and engage multiple targets more effectively in complex, network-centric combat environments.

The upgraded radar also allows the Rafale’s F4 to seamlessly switch between air-to-air and air-to-ground operations during a single mission. It can simultaneously search for enemy aircraft, track moving ground targets, guide precision-guided munitions, and provide detailed terrain mapping without requiring separate sensors. Combined with the aircraft’s advanced avionics and sensor fusion, the RBE2-AA gives pilots a comprehensive picture of the battlefield, reducing workload while increasing reaction speed and mission effectiveness in both conventional and high-threat environments

History:
The F4.1 standard specifically for the Rafale B has quite a history which is as follows:

Program Launch & Development:

Program Start (2019): Development of the F4 standard began in 2019 when French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly signed a €2 billion contract with Dassault Aviation.
Flight Tests (2021) : The first flight test campaign for the F4.1 standard, conducted by the DGA (French defence procurement agency), took place in April 2021 at Istres.

Qualification & Deliveries:

Certification (March 2023): The F4.1 standard was officially qualified by the DGA in March 2023.
First Deliveries (2023) : The first Rafale aircraft converted to the new F4.1 standard was received by the French Air and Space Force on March 2, 2023. These initial aircraft were F3R-standard jets that underwent a software transformation.
Specific Rafale B Upgrades (2024): The DGA took delivery of two twin-seater Rafale B aircraft, designated “B364” and “B363,” at the Dassault Aviation site in Mérignac in 2024. These were received at the F3R standard and then transitioned to the F4 standard at Mont-de-Marsan. The DGA also received a second Rafale B360 aircraft for upgrade to F4.1.
Ongoing Deliveries : These Rafale B aircraft are part of a broader batch of 40 aircraft, comprising 28 Rafales from tranche 4 and 12 aircraft ordered in 2021 to replace those transferred to Greece. The entire batch is expected to be delivered by the end of 2025. An additional order for 42 Rafale aircraft to the F4.1 standard was confirmed in 2023, with first deliveries from 2027.

Key Features of the F4.1 standard for Rafale B include :

The beginning for Indonesia’s Rafale acquisition were sown in mid-2021, as Jakarta sought to modernize its aging air force and replace its retired fleet of F-5 Tiger II fighters. The key initial step came on June 7, 2021, when Indonesia signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with France to acquire 36 Dassault Rafale fighter jets. These initial negotiations were, however, complicated by funding issues. The strategic environment soon accelerated the process, as France, reeling from Australia’s sudden cancellation of a multi-billion dollar submarine contract in September 2021 under the new AUKUS security pact, began vigorously pursuing stronger military partnerships in the Asia-Pacific. France’s foreign minister visited Jakarta in November 2021 to solidify these ties. This diplomatic push culminated on February 10, 2022, when Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and his French counterpart, Florence Parly, officially signed a landmark $8.1 billion contract for the jets in Jakarta. Notably, the final agreement increased the total number of aircraft to 42, with the contract for the first six jets signed immediately and orders for the remaining 36 to follow.

SCALP EG (Storm Shadow) : A long-range, stealthy stand-off cruise missile for deep strikes against high-value, hardened targets (range >250km).
AASM / HAMMER : A family of modular, rocket-boosted precision-guided weapons. It’s available in 250kg and 1000kg variants and can be fitted with GPS/INS, laser, or imaging infrared (IIR) guidance kits.
Paveway II/GBU-12 : Laser-guided bombs (LGBs) that provide high precision against a variety of target
Unguided Bombs.

Air to sea:-
Exocet AM39 (Anti-Ship Missile): A sea-skimming missile for maritime strike missions against naval threats.

Defence:
SPECTRA Système de Protection et d’Évitement des Conduites de Tir du Rafale
or Rafale Self-Protection and Countermeasures System.
It is the Rafale’s integrated electronic warfare suite, developed primarily by Thales and MBDA.
SPECTRA combines several systems:
Radar Warning Receiver (RWR):
Detects when enemy radars are searching, tracking, or locking onto the aircraft.
Identifies the type of radar (fighter, SAM, ship, etc.).
Laser Warning Receiver (LWR):
Warns if the aircraft is illuminated by a laser rangefinder or laser designator.
Missile Warning System (MWS):
Detects incoming missiles, especially infrared-guided ones.
Electronic Support Measures (ESM):
Passively listens for enemy radio-frequency emissions.
Can locate emitters without using the Rafale’s own radar.
Electronic Countermeasures (ECM):
Jams and deceives enemy radars.
Can create false targets or break radar locks.
Countermeasure Dispensers.
Automatically releases chaff against radar-guided missiles and flares against infrared-guided missiles.

Squadron & Logo:
The B4 will be operated by the 12th Air Squadron (Skadron Udara 12), nicknamed the “Black Panthers.”

Finnaly a suggestion about it ! Japan will really be the hub of every contients techs with Su-57, F35, Rafales, KF-21, and Jas-39.

Although both suggestions essentially suggest the same plane, this one is for the whole series, whilst (F.4.1) #T-0301 is for one specific airframe and its configuration.
