Id personally skip it in the current state of things.

If you insist on playing it, its a sniper tank primarily.

Don’t play it right now.

Leopard I is kinda bad in the current meta. Constantly facing stabilised MBTs while being unstabilised sucks T_T. Though idk but Gaijin changed something about the tank recently. It’s no longer as wobbly as before and I can peek shots much more reliably nowadays. The suspension doesn’t bounce incessantly like it did before, making shots like this possible.

I like to pack HEAT as my main round as you will almost always get uptiered with tons of light skinned autocannon rats running about. It lets you deal with them more consistently. Also HEAT damage is pretty good all things considered. It’s better than APDS which acts like a railgun through the tank and the spall generated has a much tighter spread from the point of impact. HEAT on the other hand acts like a shotgun and spall generated has a wider cone from the point of impact. The amount of time APDS has griefed me on the Leo I is way too damn high. Ammo turning just yellow due to bad spalling is something I can’t work with.

Play passively on the Leo I. Move only if you have to and hold angles. Being caught offguard is something you don’t want to happen as you are unstabilised. Also I would recommend binding a key to switch from automatic to manual transmission mode for the Leo 1 as well a key to bring the gear back to neutral. If you are on the move and you spot a tank, braking traditionally and letting the gun lay on target is slower and the suspension rocks way too much before the gun stabilises. If you instead press the mode switch key and neutral gear key, the tank stops very quickly and snaps the gun on target without suspension rocking, if you are on fairly flat surface. Though you have to build a muscle memory for it.

Leo I is also fairly stable if you let the tank coast and don’t hit the brake. Hitting the brake will cause your suspension to dip your chassis forward and mess with your aim. Let the tank coast and if you are on fairly flat ground, the gun will remain stable and you can fire on the move. Kinda like a Panther. You can also peek shoot making use of this mechanic. Press the accelerator, but only for a moment and let it go. By the time you are out of cover, your tank need to be in coast and not accelerating and your gun will be stable. Then you can shoot, brake and pull back into cover. Or you can switch to manual mode and select 1st gear and push out of cover if the enemy is not aware. In 1st gear the gun is stable and doesn’t bounce whatsoever and you can shoot on the move. But only do the gear trick if the tank is you want to shoot is not looking your way. The peek speed in this method is way slower compared to the former method and if the tank is aware of you, then he almost certainly will get the first shot off on you before your gun gets on him.

You can do all this but you primarily need to play passive and ambush people. It’s a pretty tough tank to play all things considered. I would recommend the Leo A1A1 as the first good Leopard experience in the game though. It is just a barebones Leopard 1 with a stabiliser and DM23. It’s much more playable compared to the Leopard I imho. Have fun!
