The YP-38 is Temporarily Available for Purchase for its First Flight Anniversary!

The second prototype of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the YP-38, made its first flight on September 17th, 1940. The P-38 entered service in mid-1941 and was widely used during the Second World War in the Pacific and Asia. The P-38 was the only American combat aircraft to be mass-produced throughout the entire war.

The YP-38 (rank II) is temporarily available to purchase for 1,150 Golden Eagles.

When: From September 16th (11:00 GMT) until September 19th (11:00 GMT).

Where: USA > Aviation > Premium vehicles.

About this aircraft

  • The YP-38 maintains speed at altitude quite well, allowing it to effectively operate as an interceptor. The pilot is protected by armor plates on all sides, enhancing survivability. The YP-38 is equipped with a powerful 37 mm cannon, supported by two 12.7 mm and two 7.62 mm machine guns.

What exactly does this mean? P-51 or P-47 wasn’t?

They weren’t produced throughout the entire war i believe, as in, from day 1 of the war to the final day

the P51 was designed in 1940 for the britsh during the war but became so good that the americans started using it (and borrowed a british engine)
P47 was designed in 1941 so if course isnt pre ww2 either

This looks like taken from wikipedia - and is not correct from various angles:

  1. WW 2: 1 September 1939 - 2 September 1945

  2. Official participation of the USA: 6 December 1941 - 2 September 1945

  3. The US entered the WW 2 by declaring war against the German and Italian Navy with the shoot-on-sight order by FDR on 11 September 1941. The participation of USN and US Marines military occupation of Iceland (US landed 8 July 1941 was even earlier.

  4. WW 2 ended 2 September 1945 whilst the last P-38 was according to the USAF museum produced in August 1945.

  5. The term combat aircraft includes bomber aircraft. The B-25 Mitchell entered mass production before the P-38 - and the last aircraft was completed on 15 October 1945.

Therefore i recommend to change the current wording in order to have next year a correct version:

The P-38 was the only American fighter to be mass-produced throughout the entire official participation of US armed forces in WW 2.

Have a good one!

Imho a “strong buy” if you know how to use it. But don’t trust me, listen to the master:

YP-38 and P-38 G fly identical.

thanks, any idea if the 37mm makes a big difference?

NP - 37 mm, depends on your aiming skills. I use it in the P-59 to finish wounded enemies. Had some Michael Bay explosions when they hit center mass. 😎

But imho the P-38 would be a good platform for the new BP task - 15 air kills with 35 mm cannon or more - but unfortunately it is just a Rank II premium and you need a Rank III aircraft.

I used the 57 mm T-18 B to complete challenge.

Edit:

It looks like i had a kind of “WT Mandela Effect” - i was 100% sure it was a Rank III plane. a fellow player gave a hint and i changed the test. Sorry for any incoveniences!

A note about the BP task, it requires an air vehicle Rank III or higher, and the YP-38 is only Rank II.
