The State of Bomber Models & Cockpits in War Thunder — A Long Overdue Discussion

Yes, but nowadays source material for bomber cockpits is very easy to find.

This is the digital age, you find photos of those things very easily.

Specially aircraft made after ww2.

Tu-160 and B-1 are years late, they’re already strong in the current air meta, but aren’t added yet.

B-1 being 10.0 - 10.7 in air RB, with Tu-160 being 10.3 - 11.0.

Yes, but the way is being paved.

I believe the devs also want an air rb rework and bomber rework.

Modern ish bombers will be added most likely in the following year’s.

That’s why I said what I said, they need to see profits in a short span of time.
B-25/ PBJ cockpits were used like a chew toy for content creators to chew and drop a little segment in their videos. It didn’t make too much noise so they stepped it down and on the next “wave” it included the B-24 but not the PB4Y, I feel like they are slowin down and not takin it as a priority.

Yes, i believe they should focus on the “main” bombers to get it going.

Like the b17.

Most famous ww2 bomber.

And ofc the new b52h and tu-95m

So i wanted to talk about something that has been bugging me since i started playing War Thunder back in 2022; And that is…

Where are the properly modelled bomber cockpits?

image

So the old WW2 bombers (and some strike aircraft) have been in the game since the open beta back in 2012, and i wan’t to talk about 2 (technically 3) vehicles in particular here.

Those being the A-20G-25 and it’s premium Lend Lease variant the A-20G-30 and the Ju-288C.

To start off, the A-20, it has been here since the open beta, and they added it’s eastern cousin in 2022 in update Fire and Ice, they are practically the same Model but with a different skin and crew models.

BUT they STILL don’t have a properly modelled cockpit! it has been 11 YEARS since War Thunder launched and this plane still has a placeholder cockpit!

Let me show you the ingame placeholder and a couple pictures of it’s actual cockpit:

-Ingame:

-IRL:

As you can see it’s worlds apart, and our ingame version is lacking a proper gunsight for it’s guns!
Let me show you a screenshot of the A-20B havoc in IL-2, keep in mind i don’t War Thunder to be on the same level as simulators but come on guys! Gaijin makes way more money than the IL-2 Great Battles Devs.

A-20B in IL-2 Battle of Kuban:

See?

And now for the Ju-288C, the plants vs zombies simulator plane:

Lads, can we put some pressure towards gaijin to atleast give the premium bombers and their tech tree variants their actual cockpits? The game isn’t in open beta anymore to justify they not having resources for this, and also they could model the MiG-19PTs cockpit to actually have it’s radar screen on it intead of just being a MiG-19S cockpit copy without the radar screen ROFL

These things happen when a game itself was a rehash of old assets from previous games for a small F2P title which then exploded out into what we see today by complete accident. I would not be surprised if many of the models on the lower tier planes (American FW 190 for example) are older than 80% of the playerbase.

Its because they are so much bigger than most fighters, with far more details to model. Plus it would only benefit a minority of a minority and so holds little value. They’d rather focus their attention on other aircraft instead of bombers (not that they have bothered even with many top tier fighters)

It’d be cool if someone would show how to make cockpits, but the guides for this are EXTREMELY old.

They aren’t getting added because of just how much money it costs to have them made. They are larger than standard fighter cockpits and are extremely expensive for gaijin to have made. They also don’t do much outside of sim experiences.

Because they can profit from it so they won’t do it, pretty much the only reason and it’s a joke, especially for the bombers they are charging money for.
But people continue to excuse Gaijin’s corner cutting because apparently it’s okay to neglect aspects of your game if it costs time and/or money.

Have yet to see other games just refuse to finish aspects of their game.

Ngl, I’ve looked into learning how to model stuff in game using the CDK just to get some vehicles that are drastically needed (SLAMRAAM, for example).

I know this is a dead and buried post, but something else really weird is that the Ju-188 A-2, has EVERYTHING modeled with love and care in the cockpit, its even got things behind the pilot that are detailed (went in VR and looked around) . This makes me question, why so much love for this one plane thats been in the game for 5 years, when the Ju-288c, a PREMIUM, 8 YEAR OLD bomber , still has horrid cockpit details

B-25 and B-24 got their cockpits…

I once said, somewhere around these forums that PREMIUM bombers should be priority for cockpits, and then was completely torched for it.

I belive the priority take into account:

Premium and then largest family (amount of aircraft that can share a cockpit model)

For example a Ju-288C will take priority over the Tu-2 any day of the week, but Tu-2 (7 vehicles in the family) will come before the Ki-49 (4 vehicles in the family) which then comes before the He-111 (3 vehicles in the family).

So then you end up with a nice and somewhat accurate roadmap for +100 aircraft.

Only exception would the Nuclear thunder bombers( B-52H and Tu-95M) which are currently just unfinished, which is made worse by the fact NT was sabotaged to make people pay for the last star needed for them.

I think another thing which needs to be addressed is the damage model on bombers and the fact that things just pop off and they have explosive bolts it feels like and b17 there tails just fall off and other bombers wings just all snap in 1 bullet which isn’t right and should be able to take a lot more punishment
Also you can’t win the game anymore by bombing the targets you can’t bomb airfields and destroy them anymore and it makes bombers useless and people don’t want to play them because of it if you had strategic bombing points like the nuclear thunder event it would make bombers a lot more popular

The issue is the damage model. Aircraft are made up of a few large pieces, when a section becomes critically damaged, it breaks off.

What needs to happen is that aircraft get broken down into a LOT more smaller pieces, that way damage becomes localised.

Take the wing for example. Currently its 3 pieces, for small aircraft it should be a 3x4 grid. That way a “hole” could be simulated in the middle of the wing. For much larger aircraft, like heavy bombers, this should be increased to something more like 4x6. (this is in part half the problem, the smallest aircraft in-game and the largest have practically the same damage model, just scaled up)

So damage would be localised.

Id also rework the tail to just be part of the fuselage, and then break the tail control surfaces down into damagable parts too.

Though I would also massively improve the modeling of hydraulic lines and electrical lines too though, so they could still be damaged.

After that just better modeling what aircraft are made from, to be a little bit more resistant, and done, you have aircraft that can take a hit or 2 and heavy bombers that take a lot more to bring down

Yeah, though this is a far larger issue than just heavy bombers

I didn’tt need to pay to get the stars for both

Me neither, but a lot of people on the days were the last star was out mostly just spend the buck on it.

You could even ask in the chat and you would recieve that most people sent the money, But I don’t have any screenshots sadly.

i highly doubt bombers are ever going to fixed, Gaijin has stated they are aware of the community out cry but given the fact the Tu-95M&B-52H were added at such a bad initial state and still are i highly doubt they actually consider or are planning a bomber re-work, After all it would be counter intuitive to add broken vehicle in order to fix them.
