The overpressure penetration for the new 203mm howizer M55 seems incorrect

Its awesome to see our first 203mm howitzer tank added this patch, however the overpressure penetration, doesn’t seem right

It has almost 3 times the explosive filler of a 155mm shell, yet only has 3.6mm more overpressure penetration? I think maybe the formula for calculating this needs to be adjusted?

You don’t quite understand how blast penetration works. It is not like kinetic penetration whereas the heavier and the faster the projectile is, the more armor pen it has. Blast penetration is different. The efficency of extra penetration per extra explosive decreases the more explosive mass it is.

For example, German short 75mms fire HE filled with 685g of TNTeq, penetrating by blast 10mm of armor (filler:pen ratio 68.5g:1mm); long 88mm HE has 1kg explosive filler, penetrating 14mm (71.4g:1mm); 105mm HE has 1.5kg TNTeq, penetrating 20mm (75g:1mm); 128mm HE has 3.7kg TNTeq, penetrating 37mm (100g:1mm); 150mm HE has 8.7 TNTeq, penetrating 61mm (142,6g:1mm).

I should point out that statcards indicate both penetration from kinetic and blast, but kinetic penetration is different for shells with larger pure explosive mass, so something like Pz.III M pens 12 mm with its HE (even though blast pen is just 5mm), but 15cm sIG 33 B Sfl pens 61 mm with its HE (blast pen here however is 60.6mm).

So you can see that extra effectiveness from extra explosive of blast decreases starting from like 1.5kg of explosive and onwards. That’s why things like Sturmtiger with its 380mm rocket (125kg TNTeq) pens only 82mm (1524,4g:1mm).

And even though 203mm HE has 23kg TNTeq, it doesn’t mean it should pen like 2.5x of that of 155mm HE. You can also check out bombs’ statcards (on planes). They tell you how much of armor blast can pen, and you will be surprised to see things like 500kg bombs with ~250kg explosive mass only pen ~100mm of armor.

Ah that explains it. Doing some testing on the dev server it seems to overpressure more reliably compared to 155mm HE. I guess this thread is not needed then
