In 1979 on repeated requests of the Communist Afghan government, the Soviet Union intervened by sending its Army in Afghanistan in the hopes of crushing the growing rebellions within Afghanistan known as the Mujahideens setting off the Soviet-Afghan War. After a decade long of fruitless Soviet anti-partisan operations and on the pressure of the UN, the USSR finally decided to withdraw its units in Afghanistan entirely in 1989 letting the Communist Afghan regime to fend for itself.

This picture was shot during the withdrawal of the last Soviet troops, on this a BMP-2 with the message in Pashto ,The friendship of the Soviet people and Afghanistan is eternal‘‘ on its way to cross the ,Friendship bridge‘‘ over the Amu river to the Soviet side of the city Termez.

This decal would be a nice and unique asset to have for the Soviet decal section.

feel like this one is a little bit too controversial for WT, considering the afghanis were in fact not friends with the soviets

Explain the friendship bridge then? Why would they build that if it wasn’t true?

To get things

Outside the jurisdiction of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, this is generally true.

The DRA and its Afghan supporters were politically and ideologically aligned with the Soviets, and it was the Soviets’ interest to keep the DRA from collapsing to the rebellion and the Mujahideen. In that sense, they were allies, but this lasted only from 1978 to 1989, ending with the Soviet withdrawal and the eventual fall of the DRA to the Mujahideen. Technically, it was a civil war between Afghan factions with different ideologies, each backed by external powers.

It’s more accurate to say that the DRA government and its Afghan supporters were aligned with, or friendly toward, the Soviets.

I don’t see why this would be controversial in War Thunder. The decal is historical and should be understood in its proper historical context.

Exactly.

The whole invasion story is centered about 2 theories:

  1. The civil war within Afghanistan was incited by a well known 3-letter agency in order to create a kind of Vietnam for the USSR. The whole goal was to weaken the USSR armed forces. The so called invasion was actually a legit help request by the DRA government to fight terrorists/freedom fighters funded by foreign power(s).

  2. The invasion was nothing more than a cover-up for the extraction of a crashed alien spaceship and took way too long.

Despite i really like theory #2 it looks like #1 has a way higher probability.

Totally agree! 👍
