On August 16th 1948 the Northrop F-89 Scorpion prototype took to the air for the first time. It was the world’s first aircraft to carry air-to-air rockets with nuclear warheads and one of the first American fighter jets equipped with guided missiles.

About this aircraft
- The F-89D is a very fast interceptor that lacks forward-firing guns. Instead, it relies on a hundred proximity-fuzed FFAR “Mighty Mouse” rockets. While hitting agile fighters with them is rather difficult, they are capable of inflicting devastating damage to bombers and larger aircraft!

Just look at it it’s literally in the game and available for test drive. Pretty awful to use imo, air-air rockets as the only armament is already rough but the rockets’s placement on the wingtips is really there to make your life miserable
As it was foretold by Tim Variety, now it appears once more… (Tim only just made a video on this, a few weeks ago now).

Should let us use the AIR-2 Genie rockets one day, the constant additions of nuclear armament might as well bring these to the game.

It’s still playable with FFAR “M439” rocket pods, thanks to their ahistorical proxy fuzes. The M439 designation is incorrect, as it is the name of the fuze used for canister or any warhead designed to explode in the air at a set distance. It should be M429, which is the proximity fuze introduced long after the F-89D was retired from USAF/ANG service, so it is anachronistic in that sense.
If you want to make it more miserable, remove the proxy fuzes and make it impossible to fire individual rockets, since the computer on the F-89D only allows you to fire using one of the following rocket-firing sequences.
Right now, the FCS of the F-89D, as it stands, is poorly implemented in the game. It’s missing air-to-air search and track mode. The computer was also capable of automatically firing rockets through its automatic intercept fire control system.

On the default livery, its S/N is 53-2639, so it’s F-89D-65-NO, which is a late-block configuration. It uses a historically correct weaker J35-A-35 powerplant.
The Arctic camouflage is 52-2141, which is F-89D-45-NO, using the same J35-A-35 powerplant. I’d classify it as a mid-block config.
You can consult the F-89D flight manual to see differences among the models.
