Recently I’ve been thinking about the different APS types.
Ive been always wondering if it’s as good as it’s described and what is the best type/vehicle armed with it?
Sadly,I won’t be getting any APS vehicles soon,as I main Germany ,and the only vehicles with it are the pumas,and I don’t really have their tree researched that much.

Puma JVTF is kind of useable. MUSS kind of works? There’s reports about the engagment distance not being correct, so if you aren’t looking at the person shooting, it might not dazzle it away. It also doesn’t work against MOST of the missiles you are going to face at that BR, so it’s meh.
To my knowledge, the Iron Fist APS is regarded by multiple people as the most effective APS present ingame. It can notably be found in the Challenger 2 “Black Knight” in the British TT. Its mainly known for its capability to combat high velocity projectiles, such as APFSDS.

watched a bunch of videos on the BN, and that APS is sick. Would be the only reason I’d grind Britain haha
And Iron Fist is underpreforming as of now.
maybe the MUSS on the regular Puma is better? Being at the lower BR you might find more missiles MUSS will work against. Haven’t played much of it recently.
Well, there are 2 types:
there’s the Puma IR Projector that disrupts SACLOS guided ATGMs. There are multiple vehicles with a similiar system, like the M1A1 HC, T90A, AMX BRENUS and a few more.
The 2nd type is like the ones on the VT4A, Merkava Mk4M and Black Night, which sends a projectile towards an incoming threat to intercept it. The systems on each tank varies a bit in performence so ill try to simplify:
Black Night’s Iron fist APS has the quickest reaction time and is capable of detecting even APFSDS rounds, and has 2 interceptors on each side of the turret, 4 total.
Mk4M TROPHY, and VT4A systems are capable of detecting only some HEATFS rounds but are mainly focused on intercepting ATGMs. Mk4M has 6 interceptors, 3 on each side of the turret.
All in All, Iron Fist APS is probably the most effective of them all, since it requires no reload between intercepts, has 70-1700 ms projectile detection, and the quickest reaction time out of all APS’ in the game.
However, even in its underperforming state, would you still say it’s currently the most reliable/effective APS ingame? From what I’ve heard it appears to be.

Best as in highest BR? Probably Black Knight or Merkava 4.
I’ve played VT-4A1, while it is a terrible vehicle for the BR (it should be at 11.3 instead of 12.0) the APS is a nice gimmick to have. It won’t save you from most HEAT shells nor guided bombs, but is incredibly useful against helicopters. You have to take into account that APS might not neutralize threats in all angles, or may not neutralize threats completely.
APS, it does not come into use in most matches, which can be somewhat disappointing. But I like to take VT-4A1 into player-made custom battles with both planes and tanks. In these types of matches, most players play with aircraft, and then try to use missiles against you, which offers a great way to test out APS in semi-realistic situations.
Definitely in a fight with “TROPHY” and “IRON FIST”; rest are negligible, especially soft kill.
I kinda like the Merkava 4M.
Not because the armor or the mobility is exceptional, but because my APS has randomly stopped the Kh-38 at times.
It’s really pleasant also being able to mostly ignore helicopters (outside the random occasions where the APS just doesn’t work).
I’ve used Iron Fist lately and it’s pretty good. Saved me more than a couple of times, even from darts.

They also really, really need to fix Merk’s resistance to overpressure. I am constantly dying to to silly hits like this (Type-89 ATGM fwiw), artillery splash and autocannon. Does the 2-foot thick composite cheek between this hit and the crew matter naught ? lmao.
I have a suspicion that Trophy acts like a reverse softkill APS, guiding munitions towards it to make it easier for trophy to intercept. If trophy still fails however, it will hit the turret bustle and kill you instantly. I might be completely wrong, but honestly that’s how it feels sometimes cause nearly every time trophy fails to intercept it overpressures for me
I can’t really comment on your theory, but I can agree with the overpressure frustration.
If they want to completely butcher Merk’s KE protection, and make it CE only, fine, whatever. But what is the point of all this CE protection - when Chemical projectiles don’t even need to pen in order to one tap you lol.
Figuratively speaking, they’ve put all our eggs in one basket that has a hole in it.
I guess it’s the price of being able to overpressure everything else in stupid ways lol (still isn’t a valid enough reason for it to be such an easy kill)
Every other Merk player I see, speaks so highly of M339, but every time I try to emulate it, I just get lots of ‘hit’ lol. I wish it would work for me.
