The AIM-4/26 Falcon - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

6 aim4 and also these ones have real motors unlike super falcon

I’d say the F-106B is like being completely unarmed

No proxy fuse makes the missile miss with a simple rudder kick or barrel roll, no extra range will make the missile usable as a main weapon. I only get kills with them in the F-106 on people flying straight or doing a simple slow turn.

AIM-4s currently give you the War Thunder equivalent of food poisoning.

Tho they will have worse seekers (unless it ever received the AIM-4D) and due to the better motor, they will have more g pull, and they don’t have any guidance for the first 1.4 seconds. They also have no sustainer

ok but real question

Spoiler

Does the motor burn for longer?

AIM-4 has a lot of drag and it isn’t helped by the short rocket burntime

it burns for 1.4 seconds after that the guidance turn on also they burn alot of speed after that after 5 seconds theyre going as fast and aim 4g would roughly but before that they should be going at mach 2.something
you can see the performance in the graph that Pvt_Wade shared(the second one on the bottom)

when did tests these take place?

the footage also seems to be stitched together (the f-106 firing is probably not the same one as the one with the Aim-4D)

The unedited film reel of the helmet mounted sight footage seems to from the first of September, 1970.

The polhemus hms system trials are dated from 1972 to 1975, so it’s possible this is the very earliest development footage when they were trying to figure out the best way to make it work.

I really hope we get the F-101B this patch so we can finally see the AIM-4A/C/D in action, I want it no matter how it performs

what does AIm-4D-8 stand for? a sub variant?

they should be close to an aim-9J in terms of performance but abit slower
tho. The AIM-4D is all aspect i think, looking at the smc (from 3 km)

AIm-4D compared to Aim 26 (very cluttered tho)

and aim-26 compared to aim-9j

Probably just saying it’s the 8th flight test of the aim-4d in this configuration. It’s also possible it’s the 8th development variation of the aim-4d as they were trying to bug fix it’s issues in vietnam/preparate for the AIM-4H, but that seems very unlikely to me.

since i dont know where elso to share this il just share this here as its kinda related:

the f-101 seems to have shared the HMS not sure if the source is reliable tho
Visually Coupled Systems

and at 8:11 a f-101 can be seen (in the video lglscs shared) also this seems to change the timeline as the video says 1970 and the article thingy says 1969 so this might just be even earlier tests
and also, i don’t know which variant of the voodoo it was (the one in the video has a drogue chute so that might help narrow it down)

Also the f-101 voodoo thats coming to the game might be the f-101a since that one was passed to the devs

I really hope it’s the 101B, or at least that we get both

AIM-4C/A vs AIM-4F comparison (the C is a copied F with edited motor, weight and dimensions values (wings untouched))

I think the source is reliable, it matches the developments made at the time, was written at a time all those developments were still rather new (1974) and the text closely matches the actual article that was published back then, the first page of which was uploaded by f106deltadart.com , like @Pvt_Wade posted. The timeline indicates that tests from 1969-1970 used a “granny” combining glass (as we see in the video ), at which point they removed the combining glass and projected the sight into the parabolic visor instead (kinda like VTAS II).

And on another note, we have confirmation that the F101B’s did use AIM-4D’s in service from this 1972 interceptor magazine article reporting on the william tell exercise of the same year.

hmm.

Can anyone visually identify the AIM-4 variant? I think these might be -D’s as they have the forward canards and lack extended fins.

broken aim4f aside, how well represented is the kinematic perfomance of the aim4g in war thunder? it feels a bit draggy.

G is F but with infrared seeker
