TDs are my favorite vehicle class, but what’s the point of playing TDs here? From what I’ve noticed, heavy/medium tanks may have slighly lower penetration, but it’s still enough to penetrate most tanks at the same tier, while TDs sacrifice their turret… exactly, for what?
From what I’ve noticed so far, the maps encourage dynamic urban combat, flanking, or hull-down fighting behind cover. There are still tons of fences and barriers in the cities, sniping doesn’t work that well, and there are very few maps with truly good camping spots
On top of that, I’ve noticed that crew survival in TDs is much worse, and getting penetrated usually ends the game. There’s also not much difference in shell drop-off over distance, so what’s the point?
The biggest benefit to TDs is that they can punch through the tough nuts. Depending on what TD you use, some are heavily armoured and you can use them as a breakthrough vehicle, other ones are lighter, have more mobility and are good ambush vehicles. While yes mediums, heavies, and sometimes lights can have similar firepower that might seem insignificant, there’s always a few vehicles that everything else will struggle with
Some TDs can be effectively immortal from up front unless your enemy knows what they’re doing or they bring big guns themselves (German, Soviet ones around 4 to 5 BR).
What nation are you playing? with US td’s, i never had much interest with them as they are all limited in some ways. German td’s are definitely worth playing, the have great armour and firepower. As for Russians, they do have immense firepower but have pretty bad reloads and the armour is ok at best, so if u like sniping they’ll do fine
TD’s also get the ammo crate ability. This is not always extremely beneficial to all TD’s, but can be VERY beneficial to some of them. Especially TD’s that have a limited first stage ammo storage. If you drop the ammo crate, it will replenish your first stage ammo storage at a significantly faster rate than waiting for your crew to replenish the first stage normally.
Bottom line though, you should play what you enjoy. If you enjoy TD’s more than MBT’s, heavies, or light tanks, then focus on your TD’s 👍 It doesn’t matter how “good” you are with TD’s, how many kills you get per match or whatever. It’s your time, do exactly what you want.
I will suggest that you consider getting premium account time, especially as there are fewer TD’s overall and if you typically get “fewer” kills per match. With premium account you cannot lose SL’s from a “bad” match, in addition to the obvious benefits of boosted RP and SL gains.
Premium account time goes on sale for 50% off twice a year, next sale is at the end of April/beginning of May. I always recommend the 180 days of premium account time from the online store which is ~$20 when it is on sale. (You can get a full year in game for Golden Eagles, but it’s not that much cheaper, imo it’s just more straightforward to do the 180 days from the online store.) Then you can get 180 days again in 6 months during the next 50% off sale to keep the premium account time rolling if you want.
Lastly, always feel free to ask for advice here on the forums about which TD’s you might want to focus on. Some are excellent, some are OK, and some might be best to avoid. But even with advice if you like the vehicle, play the vehicle if you enjoy it 🙂
Link to 180 days of premium account, it is NOT on sale yet:
I bought a Brummbar to level up some vehicles faster; the St. Emil is really sluggish , and in Panzer IV/70 don’t really feel armor on this BR. I’m planning to get Waffenträger and the Jpz 4-5 and then quit germany
I’m also leveling up the USSR tree and have the SU-152 and ISU-152. I see that higher eras in the line from the SU-152 destroyers lose horizontal gun angles, which I don’t really like. I’ll still go for those more paper ones, don’t have ASU-57 yet
I bought myself an Strv 103-0 for earning credits, and I really enjoy playing with it—finally, I can play stealthily and shoot from long distances, the laser rangefinder is a huge help too
After looking through all the tanks, I’m going to focus on the Swedish, Chinese, and Japanese trees. I also like some of the UK tanks (6–9) and the AMX 30.
