Good day all,
Well, because I’ve been forwarded to the forum for this, let’s talk about the T-72 Commander’s Copula that’s currently in game and how it’s wrong!
As a disclaimer, I did attempt to have this ran up through the proper chain of a bug report through the War Thunder Community Report, but got denied twice with “it’s not a bug”. T-72 series missing commander’s copula armor // Gaijin.net // Issues
So, currently in game, all T-72 variants have their commander’s hatch being horizontally flat and doesn’t go above the rim of the weld line.
HOWEVER, that’s not how it looks like in real life.

As you can tell, the depth of the cover is pretty significant. However, “Bug Reporting Manager #1” stated that it was “This is not armor, but anti-radiation protection. The developers do not plan to add it.”
( T-72A/T-72B/T-72B (1989)/T-72B3/T-90M Missing Cupola Collision // Gaijin.net // Issues)
(T-72A/ T-72B/ T-72B (1989)/ T-72B3/ T-90M Missing Cupola Armour // Gaijin.net // Issues)
Fun fact, there IS anti-radiation armor there… on the outside of the hatch, which is called Podboi lining. It’s made out of a borated doped polyethylene that’s to minimize radiation dosage to the crew inside. It, however, will provide negligible ballistic protection as it’s just a plastic. If you’re interested to see more of the T-72 tank, I recommend the videos by The Tank Museum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XjFKVyXzls&t=1234s) or Wargaming Europe, who partnered with Australia Armour and Artillery Musuem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krp2y88nNCo).
The reason I’m bringing this up is that it would add a realistic weak spot to the T-72 series that SHOULD be there, seeing how Gaijin loves to talk about high fidelity models. This doesn’t even get into the issue of Gaijin still not adding Soviet/Russian tank equipment required for turret rotation like they promised almost a YEAR ago, but I’m just trying to start out small. What do y’all think, should it be properly modeled or just a waste of modeler time?
- Yes, it should be fixed
- No, it’s a waste of time for Gaijin
- At another time, we have bigger fish to fry
