History
T-90M
The T-90M started it’s life as the T-72B which entered service in 1985. In the T-72B’s life time it went under various modifications and modernizations.
The T-90, which was the next step of the modernization of the T-72B. It kept the same armor and propulsion layout as in the T-72B. But internally, the fire control system was replaced with new components and on the outside the shtora-1 soft-kill aps was installed. It started development in 1988 and was adopted in 1992.
The next modifications are the T-90A and T-90S. Both featured the new welded turret and a new 1000hp V-92S2 engine. The T-90S is an export version of the T-90 manufactured by uralvagonzavod. In 2001 India signed a contract for 310 T-90S and in 2017 Vietnam ordered 73 tanks. The T-90A was further developed for the Russian army, still keeping the new welded turret and 1000hp engine from T-90S. The notable upgrades were the cannon, which was the 2A46M-5 and the noticable shtora-1 from the standard T-90. It enter service in 2005.
Now to the T-90M, that might not be the last modification of the T-90 series. It entered service in 2020. It uses the same hull as the T-90A, but yet again there’s new components, such as: new welded turret with a rear compartment for the ammunition, a new engine generating 1130hp, new sights and new relikt ERA. The tank still gets modified to this day.
Arena-M
The Arena-M active protection system is modernized from the original Arena aps. The Arena aps was first installed on the Object 219E experimental tank which later became known as the T-80BM1. The program was revealed to public in 1992.
Arena was tested in 1995 in kubinka, it successfully defended a Russian tank against anti-tank guided missiles. Later in 1997 the Arena was fitted onto a T-80U renaming it the T-80UM1.
The BMP-3M’s modernization package also received the Arena aps.
The T-72M1M and object 219M were also fitted with the Arena.
Later the modernized version was developed. It had less charges, but is able to cover 360° horizontally instead of 270°. The Arena-M was fitted first into the T-72B3M for trials in 2017.
And now it’s T-90M’s turn to trial the Arena-M. Which started in September 2024.
