The T-72KAE.

  • Description:
    • Role: Main Battle Tank
    • Origin: Kazakhstan/Turkey
    • Manufacturer: Kazakhstan ASELSAN Engineering (KAE)/Aselsan
    • Summary:
      • The T-72KAE is a derivative of the Soviet T-72A main battle tank, modernized by the Kazakh Defense Company, and Aselan Defense of Turkey. The project began in the early 2010’s to modernize the Kazakh Army’s aging T-72A/B’s, whether in service or in storage, to meet modern military requirements. Involved are three parties, Kazakhstan Engineering, ASELSAN, and the Presidency of the Defense Industry. These three entities formed the Kazakhstan ASELSAN Engineering, or KAE company with a respective share of 50%, 49%, and 1%. The vehicle has gone through multiple minor modernizations each with the same mission. Two main programs were developed from the company, the ‘Shygys’ and KAE which is essentially the same tank with minor differences. The T-72KAE developed by KAE focuses on several enhancements including new fire control system (FCS), remote weapon station (RWS), powerpack, armor panels, countermeasures, and communications equipment. The new FCS, developed by Aselsan, utilizes a central interface unit which connects to multiple electronic control units, laser rangefinder, and sensors which provide information to the Gunner through there 3rd-generation optical sight as well as the Commander through the SARP-NSV remote weapon station which also acts as an independent sight equipped with its own laser rangefinder. Also connected to the central interface unit is a laser warning receiver to alert the crew of incoming laser guided munitions or targeting equipment and 8x 81mm smoke grenade launchers. The original powerpack is swapped to a locally built V-84-1 turbocharged diesel engine produced by Argun which produces 840hp to propel the vehicle as well as power electronic equipment. The T-72KAE is equipped with ERA paneling that covers the turret front and top as well as the UFP of the vehicle. It can be optionally mounted on the hull sides or have cage armor installed instead. Other upgrades include new VHF radios developed by ASELSAN for secure, encrypted communications between command and frontline elements. The T-72KAE has made multiple debuts such as KADEX-2018, and KADEX-2020. In 2018, testing occurred during Kazakhstan’s volatile weather with highly successful results. Currently it is unknown what the status of this vehicle is and whether upgrades have been completed and accepted into service or have been delayed.
