The T-72M1 is an export variant of the T-72A main battle tank (MBT), also known as Object 172M-E5. This tank saw widespread introduction into the Czechoslovak Army and later the Czech and Slovak Armies. The Czechoslovak produced variant was also widely exported to countries such as East Germany, Iraq, Algeria, and many more.
The T-72 ERA follows the tradition of Czech export vehicles, with this variant serving as the prototype of the well-known T-72EA, which saw widespread introduction into the Ukrainian and Moroccan Armies.
The T-72 ERA prototype differs somewhat from the production model of the T-72EA. It did not receive the modernized fire control system, meaning that it lacks a thermal sight. Protection on the sides is also worse due to the absence of explosive reactive armor, and the lack of smoke grenade launchers.
The T-72EA exists in around 3 different variants, depending on which version of the T-72 it was derived from. The Moroccan Army used T-72B series tanks for modernization, and these were later donated to Ukraine. Ukraine modernized T-72M and T-72M1 tanks into the T-72EA variant. Today, around 200+ of these tanks are in service with Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have further modified them on multiple occasions by modifying them with electronic jammers, additional ERA blocks, and other upgrades.
