Development history

Spoiler

The T-64A’s design started with a project named the object 430 in the early 1951. It created 3 prototypes which were tested in Kubinka in 1958.

Soviets used an opposed piston engine for the project; the 4TD. The engine was paired with a transmission system that had 2 lateral gears on each side of the engine making the engine compartment shorter than of the T-62 's and T-55 's.

The tank also got an improved cooling system and new lightweight suspension, featuring hollow metallic wheels of a small diameter and caterpillar tracks with rubber joints. It was armed with with the D-54TS cannon and had a 120mm of frontal armor. The tank Wasn’t as good as the T-55 that was entering the service, which lead to a decision that it wasn’t ready for production. However the object 430U was armed with a 122mm cannon with 160mm of frontal armor. The project proved that it can carry the firepower and armor of a heavy tank on a medium tank chassis. Because of the proven point of the object 430U, a new project started: The object 432.

A D-68 (2A21) 115mm cannon was installed on the object 432. An autoloader was designed to replace the human loader to reduce the size of the tank. With the autoloader fitted the crew size was reduced to 3 people. The size and weight was reduced; from 36 tonnes (object 430) to 30.5 tonnes. The height dropped by 76mm.

However, when the British 105mm L7 and american M68 were fitted on centurions and m60s, it forced the designer team to adopt composite armor on the object 432. The turret’s armor consisted of aluminum alloy between 2 high strength steel layers. The hull armor consisted of 80mm laminated steel, 2 52mm layers of fiberglass sheets and 20mm steel sheet.

The composite armor made the tank heavier (from 30.5 tonnes to 34 tonnes), which lead to the development of the 5TDF opposed piston engine. Compared to the 4TD, the newly designed 5TDF had the same build idea but made more horsepower (700hp). The tank’s production started at October 1963 in the kharkiv plant and entered service in December 1966 as the T-64.

T64

Even though first T-64s were rolling off the assembly lines, the design team was working on a new version, named Object 434, which would allow it to maintain firepower superiority. A very newly developed 125mm D-81T cannon was fitted on the tank. The larger 125mm ammunition meant that less could be carried inside of the T64, which lead to a new developed autoloader to be fitted; the 6ETs10. The autoloader has 28 round capacity and can fire 8 shots per minute. The tank also got a new stabilizer; the 2E23. It was coupled to the new TPD-2-1 (1G15-1) sight. Night driving was adopted thanks to the TPN-1-43A periscope and L2G infrared projector that was on the left side of the turret cheek.

Prototypes were tested in 1966 and 1967 and, as production began after the six hundredth T-64, it entered service in the Soviet Army under the name: T-64A.

T-64AV

Spoiler

The T-64AV was in the modernization program like the T-80B in 1985. The T-64AV is based on T-64A obr. 1983. Over the years from 1971 to 1983 it got: Possibility to mount kontakt-1 era, 2E42-1 stabilizer, 1A40 FCS, welded plate on UFP (either 16mm or 30mm), smoke launchers, reinforced tracks and A new turret design with corundum ball filling.

There’s more to list, but I wrote everything that would impact the gameplay.
