T-34/75 (Ps. 245-4)

Summary

The Finnish T-34-75 (Ps. 245-4) was a one-off experimental conversion of a captured Soviet T-34-85. In February 1945, facing shortages of 85mm ammunition, Finnish forces at the State Artillery Factory fitted a German 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 gun into its turret. Although the trial never proceeded into anything more, and the original ZiS-S-53 was later restored, the non-standard gun collar remained. This rare hybrid combines the T-34-85’s mobility and protection with the proven German 75mm L/48, offering a semi-unique rank 4 sidegrade to the already existing T-34-85.

History / Development

Finland captured seven T-34-85 medium tanks during the Continuation War, primarily in the summer of 1944 on the Karelian Isthmus. These vehicles, nicknamed Pitkäputkinen Sotka (long-barreled pochard), were pressed into service with the Finnish Armoured Division and saw limited combat against their former Soviet owners before the armistice in September 1944. All surviving examples continued in training and reserve roles after the war. By early 1945 a shortage of 85mm ammunition had developed. Political tensions made it impractical to source new stocks from the Soviet Union. In February 1945 the State Artillery Factory (Valtion Tykkitehdas) therefore experimented with re-arming one vehicle Ps.245-4 with a German 7.5cm StuK 40 L/48 (Psv. K/40) taken from existing stocks of StuG III assault guns. For unknown reasons, the test fell through. The original 85mm ZiS-S-53 gun was re-fitted, though the modified non-standard gun collar remained on the tank. The Finnish T-34-85 fleet, including Ps.245-4, remained in training service until the early 1960s, when the arrival of T-54 and T-55 tanks rendered them obsolete. The experimental 75mm conversion itself never entered operational service and exists solely as a documented one-off wartime modification. Unfortunately no photos of it exist. The photos seen online have the re-fitted 85mm.

In War Thunder

The T-34-75 or Ps. 245-4 would bring more WW2 options for rank 4 in the Finnish-Swedish TT, and an unique sidegrade to the otherwise copy paste T-34-85. I propose it would be foldered in the standard tech tree with the normal T-34, but the case for an event vehicle is also valid. Since there’s no photographic evidence of the 75mm, it’s hard to say what it would have looked like, if just a L/48 slapped onto it with it’s muzzle break included. If this means the 75mm has insufficient information for addition, the refitted 85mm with the collar could also be considered.
