OVERVIEW

T.231 is a high-speed coastal patrol boat built based on the Hysucat 18 PBH design by Technotic Intertrading Co., Ltd., Thailand. It is the Navy’s first and only catamaran patrol boat. The T.231 is a unique high-speed coastal patrol vessel in the Royal Thai Navy, notable for its catamaran (twin-hull) design. This configuration offers enhanced speed, stability, and maneuverability compared to traditional monohull vessels.

During its initial trials, it attracted a lot of attention due to experimental installations — including a Sea Vulcan triple-barrel 20mm cannon mounted at the bow and an optional setup of two Stinger surface-to-air missiles, the results of the test however seems to conclude that it cant work with the Sea Vulcan but I cannot confirm if this is true, it could also be that the RTN simply wanted to reduce maintenance costs and went with the already in service 20mm Oerlikon.

HTMS T.231 was commissioned on February 11, 1988. It had a displacement of 37 tons, was 18.25 meters long, 6.25 meters wide, and had a maximum draft of 1.6 meters. Powered by two MAN TBD234 V12 diesel engines, it could reach speeds of up to 38 knots. Its armaments upon commissioning ended up being a 20mm GAM-BO1 cannon at the bow and two 12.7mm M2 machine guns on the cabin roof. The vessel served under the 3rd Patrol Boat Division, Gulf Patrol Squadron before being quietly decommissioned a few years ago.

The T.231 was an ambitious project, representing Thailand’s foray into indigenous naval shipbuilding. Its catamaran hull was a significant departure from conventional designs, aiming to achieve higher speeds and better sea-keeping abilities. Initially, the vessel faced challenges in meeting performance expectations. However, through iterative improvements and modifications, it eventually achieved its intended operational capabilities, marking a milestone in Thai naval engineering.

After decommissioning, HTMS T.231 was relocated to Krabi Province as part of Phase 2 of the Krabi Underwater Learning Park Project. The project received eight decommissioned naval vessels: T.216, T.217, T.218, T.220, T.221, T.222, T.231, and T.241, all to be submerged in the Krabi estuary intended to be submerged to create artificial reefs, promoting marine biodiversity and serving as a site for diving tourism*. However, as of the latest available information, the T.231 remains on land, awaiting deployment.

IN-GAME

This would serve to be a good pair to the Japanese Hydrofoil PG-02 but slower. The contention however is that should it have its trialled armament of 20mm Sea Vulcan or the actual armament of 20mm Oerlikon. Personally, I think it should be implemented with the triple barrel Sea Vulcan but without the stingers since it was never actually fitted. My reasoning for this is simple, the nature of this boat was always experimental - testing the capabilities of local shipyards if they can produce top of the line boats for the Royal Thai Navy hence it deserves to have its experimental weapons depicted in-game. This would also make it an actual viable pair to the PG-02 as well. However Gaijin could also simply use the boring 20mm Oerlikon and it would be fine as well, would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Note: Its actually harder to find photos of it with its commissioned armament with the Oerlikon instead with its experimental 20mm Sea Vulcan

DISCLAIMER:

I dont actually fully understand the technology behind it. From what I understand, its not technically a hydrofoil and a separate distinction all together hence the Hysucat or Hydrofoil Supported Catamaran distinction and is a hybrid between a standard hull and hydrofoil.

However with other similar projects, I can see a wing under the catamarans which look like the same traditional hydrofoil wings but in this one, I couldnt see one so Im not sure why it carries this designation since it looks like a normal twin hulled catamaran to me.

There is a man that was said to have assisted in the building of this particular boat called Prof.-Dr. K-G.W. Hoppe that now works for Foil Assisted Ship Technologies CC and they do list this boat as part of their past projects portfolio:

They even have a much clearer image of the one I used on the actual suggestion:

The professor even has an extensive study on it:

However as I have stated earlier, I cant seem to find the hydrofoil blades that I expect it should have to be a true hybrid. It might just be that when it was decommissioned, it was removed but why would you do that? All photos of its underbelly that I can see are recent pictures when they were already decommissioned and sources on it are pretty scarce so if someone can shed some more light, it would be helpful.

The professor also has a very exhaustive video on the technology but for the life of me I cannot understand a single word because Im not used to the German accent (This one is mentioned in 17:15):

For context, this is the thing Im looking for (the hydrofoil blade I was mentioning):
