In the main Swedish Wishlist discussion (original thread), we’ve covered a lot of gaps in the tech tree, but one major issue has never been discussed in-depth—Sweden’s severely lacking SPAA lineup.
With Norway, Denmark, and Finland now semi-officially part of the Swedish tech tree, we have more historical vehicles to pull from, yet Sweden still suffers from huge gaps in AA capability across all BRs. This post is a focused discussion on what should be added to finally fix Sweden’s SPAA situation.
The State of Sweden’s SPAA
1.0 - 3.7: No real SPAA options, only repurposed trucks.
4.0 - 6.7: The Lvkv 42 is incorrectly modeled with the broken Lvakan 48, and outside of that? Nothing. The U-SH 405 was a slap-on bandaid using in-game assets.
7.0 - 8.7: The VEAK 40 exists, but it has incorrect ammo and extremely limited effectiveness.
9.0+: No effective gun-based SPAA, leaving Sweden highly vulnerable to air attacks. The Lvkv 9040C is far weaker than its counterparts in other nations.
Many current “SPAA” options aren’t actual SPAA, just repurposed vehicles:
U-SH 204GK – An armored car, not a true SPAA.
ZSU-57-2 – Technically SPAA, but completely ineffective due to no radar and no proximity shells.
Sweden lacks proper, dedicated SPAA at nearly every tier!
How Can This Be Fixed?
With Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish assets available, Sweden has several potential candidates for proper SPAA that could fill these gaps:
Possible Additions
Lvkv fm/43 – A Swedish SPAA armed with a 40 mm Bofors L/60 autocannon, providing a solid mid-tier option. A natural upgrade to the Lvkv 42 and L/62 Anti II.
Tridon System – A Swedish project featuring a 40 mm Bofors gun on a Volvo truck chassis, with radar and laser rangefinders for better target tracking.
Finnish SPAA Autocannon Trucks – Finland operated multiple truck-mounted autocannon systems, some of which could be viable mid-tier additions.
Bandvagn 206 with Ground-Air Missiles – A highly mobile, Scandinavian-based missile SPAA option, perfect for modern-era lineups.
Fixing Existing Issues
Lvakan 48 Fix – The Lvkv 42’s main armament has been reported as incorrectly modeled for years. Fixing this would greatly improve its effectiveness.
Reclassification of U-SH 204GK – It should not be classified as SPAA; it’s a light tank. Reclassifying it would allow it to receive scouting, making it actually valuable in its intended role.
Discussion Points
What historical Scandinavian SPAA could be added?
Should Sweden get radar-equipped SPAA at mid-tiers?
When can we realistically expect these vehicles to make their way into War Thunder? Or is this just another pray and hope scenario?
I’m all for more Swedish SPAA but painting it as if they don’t have anything good is just silly. Pbv 301, L-62, Lvkv 42, ItPsV, Lvkv 9040, ASRAD, and Ito are all highly competitive and some of the best at their BR.
That being said, gimme IRIS-T SLS!
I also have to wonder wonder what you mean by
The VEAK is at the second-lowest BR for radar SPAA, there are unguided SPAA at the same or even higher BRs.
The missile carriers are good, the rbs 70s are good.
The L/62 is probably in my opinion, the only SPAA at its tier that is good. And the pbv 301 of course, that thing at its tier does wonders.
The lvkv 42 and VEAK are both severely gimped by the fact that they messed up the lvakan 48, yes i will be pissed about it until they finally do the right thing and fix the mess they made
PBV-301 has decent fire rate but no turret rotation make it essentially worthless for close range which is 90% of aircraft which you fight at 2.7, L-62 is a joke to even call an spaa and the fact you even included it either tells me you’ve never touched it or even seen one that wasn’t doing the only job it can which is hunt tanks. The L-62 has too slow firerate and no turret traverse essentially. LvKV 42 is a decent TD but spaa is l3aving a lot to be desired. Constantly reload and having only about 90 rounds and that means sitting still and reloading which leaves you exposed. ITPSV wasn’t mentioned since its okay but the wide guns imo through off accuracy butnits solid. Veak is a joke and the fact you think the Radar counts for anything is a joke. It has worse velocity than the ZSU-37-2 and worse fire rate and sustained fire, constantly reloading after both guns use 20 rounds. Making it impossible to engage targets that aren’t within 1km. The ZSU-37-2 is infinitely better at spaa and at the same BR. The asrad is incredibly mid. Missiles are only effective until about 5km at which they swing uncontrollably. Ito is in a similar boat but only usable within 8km. Sweden has 1 decent spaawhile the rest are almost worthless compared to using aircraft which is then a different point as sweden lacks equivalent CAP at most BR’s.
Ive never found the existing spaa to be as bad as everyone says, but it would indeed be nice for some more, like the Lvkv fm/43… (Seriously, where is it Gaijin). Still what i would find to be the biggest issue is the sun powered flashbang that happens when the Lvkv 42 fires a round, it makes it incredibly difficult to aim with the high fire rate since it often completely blocks the sight of the target aircraft, fix that and im good.
A bit of an upgrade to the Lvrbv 701 could be the ARMAD. Same armament but a 3-man crew in a protective turret + driver. Also different is the main vehicle, which could be an M113A1 or a Norwegian M113A2.
It’s funny to see people trying to claim that some country has better SPAA or SAM in the game than others. No, it’s not true, at the moment all gun radar SPAA & missile SAM systems are very much weakened compared to reality. First of all, this concerns the accuracy of target acquisition by the radar, and as a result, the accuracy of the ballistic dispersion of shells - the radar gives an absolutely incorrect lead, which is why the plane / helicopter playfully dodges your shells, simultaneously killing you with an ATGM. The weakening of optical target tracking in the IR ranges is shown unrealistically, in reality, even in very bad weather, the range is declared to be about 14-18 km; but I do not know about the effect of weather on infrared lasers (laser-guided missiles), this needs to be clarified. The damage of anti-aircraft missiles is very weak due to the broken damage models of air vehicles, this applies to drones and helicopters. Today I was mentally burned out after leaving the battle after the F-14 received two critical hits from the 9M311-1M (I’m not surprised that they turned on the oppression mode on my account because of the constant criticism of the Gaidzins, they like dirty tricks). The maneuverability of anti-aircraft missiles with distance, judging by everything, is also greatly reduced in many models compared to the real one, strong unrealistic swing of the missile on the trajectory, which is why it is impossible to hit even a straight-flying drone. This applies to VT1, for example, from the latest fixes, it seems that MIM146 was corrected ( I have not seen the graphs of the missile maneuverability at range for IRL). MANPADS are greatly weakened in terms of target acquisition range and maneuverability, some MANPADS in the game do not have LOAL, which they have in reality. We can go on and on, but I think it is clear what I am talking about. The game does everything to ensure that the player with laser-guided bombs and guided missiles can bomb you from the stratosphere with impunity, but you won’t be able to shoot them down below, because the game has unrealistic altitude differences and fictitious antipodes at the radar + reduced radar capture accuracy.
It would be more correct to say that all SPAA & SAM in the game are Chinese fakes from AliExpress/eBay, which only copy the appearance of the equipment without its real capabilities.
