I recently visited the allied museum in Berlin and they have declassified copies of US intelligence reports about a suspicious box on the back of a GDR T62 on display. The display does not explain what the box is and I am curious about it. I cannot find any info on it, and it seems to be only on the mine clearing variants of the T62’s spotted. To me it seems to be to small to be some kind of MCLC attachment and I am thinking it is some kind of smoke launcher attachment or even an attachment to lay makers for vehicles following behind in a column through a mine field. I have no idea what it is and want to see if anyone would know what it is.
thats a t-62 for sure, there no space between the first and second roadwheel but instead space on the last three roadwheel.
really interesting find you have as, i did seen some info on gdr having t-62 but never a photo of it. I guess we could make a suggestion now.
It’s a T-55, plus the GDR never received any T-62s
how so? you can literally see the roadwheels
notice how there no spacing on t-55 back roadwheels?
they might have ordered some.
Is it GDR or simply GSFG though
I noticed, likely from an ally.
GSFG are just Soviet forces in Germany hence the name. There has never been evidence of these vehicles being used by East German forces from my knowledge, and I’m not willing to trust a single source.
Hello,
My initial thought was that this was some kind of water fording kit; I remember reading about one from a document about the T-62 on DTIC. It almost reminds me of the kits Sherman’s used in D-Day, so I went looking for this document. Here is the image I thought of:
As you can see, the engine deck is visible in this drawing, so this rules out the possibility of it being a water fording kit.
I think your idea of it being a smoke launcher makes the most sense, giving its position and angle of inclination, whatever this device is. It would also make sense as this is a mine clearing vehicle, in the image you can somewhat make out the cleaning blades of the mine clearing variant of T-62s, shown here:
Oddly enough, this was the only photo of a T-62 with a mine clearing device that I could find, that isn’t a model or picture that is too hard to make out. If anyone has more, that would be greatly appreciated.
Has anyone read the document? It says that they were Czechoslovakian T-62s…
